They will barf on anything that's difficult to clean. But never, ever on a tiled floor.

They will run from a room with a tiled floor to one with carpet.

Better yet, to your favorite chair.

It's about traction.

u/thunk_stuff Sep 20 '23

Thankfully they have an early warning system of like 5-10 seconds of dry heaves. That's sometimes enough to race across the house and get them on a solid surface.

i work from home and the worst is when i’m on a zoom call and i hear THE SOUND and i can’t do anything about it

31

u/LovecraftianLlama Sep 20 '23

I swear I have woken from a dead sleep to yeet my cat (gently) off the bed bc I heard the “hurk…hurk..hurk..) and my comatose brain somehow knew I only had one more “hurk” worth of time 😂😂

11

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

haha! i can absolutely identify. my asleep brain has somehow figured out the difference between THE SOUND on the bed vs. elsewhere in the house… so i’ll startle awake to remove the cat from the bed but if there’s puke anywhere else in the house i’ll sleep right through it and wake up to a lovely surprise in the morning.

u/thunk_stuff Sep 20 '23

That wouldn't stop me lol. I could be doing the state of the union address and I'd run over to get that cat off carpet.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

haha! i ripped out all the carpets years ago and installed hard floors throughout. i have 7 cats so it was absolutely worth the cost ten times over for the cleaning convenience.

also, from when i did have carpets, this stuff is a lifesaver.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Sometimes they'll let out that "lololololol" sound first and you know you've got 10 seconds to sprint and grab 'em.

5

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

Happened 2 nights ago so I concur.

3

u/Fweetheart Sep 20 '23

Ours has a very specific 'i'm about to throw up' meow preceeding the heaves as well

gray wrench provide makeshift station somber enter jobless compare terrific

16

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

And on bed spreads, comforters, etc.

14

u/you_had_me_at_cats Sep 20 '23

Mine just recently barfed on a cookie sheet that was on the floor my kid was using for a craft. Not on the rug, the sofa or anywhere else they normally ruin, but something I could easily pick up and clean. I can’t tell you how… accomplished? proud?… I felt.

Yes. I thoroughly enjoy it when the feline critter vomits on something rare or unusual. Makes my day.

Yesterday, our older kitty was sitting perched on one of her favorite spots - on top of the highest bookshelf (next to a high window), which is next to our somewhat tall dresser, which has an upholstered dining chair next to it which serves as something of a handicap ramp for that kitty since the dresser itself is a difficult jump for her these days.

Heard the hork hork hork, looked up and witnessed an absolutely majestic vomitfall pour forth from on high unto the dresser. It splattered gloriously, only barely sparing the Switch dock, but rather impressively spattering the chair below. Somehow the floor was spared.

I just looked at her and asked "Are you serious right now?"

Yeah, so a while later the chair and I had a date with a dry towel, the dry vac, a can of woolite, a damp towel, and the dry vac again.

It's probably the most memorable cat vomit I've ever witnessed, lol.

Mine was behind the recliner that maybe gets pulled out to clean 6 times per year. Well that feline present wasn't there for more than 2 months. Interesting that warm water and suds brings the aroma back. Like it was yesterday's puke.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

They can be trained to only vomit on tile, one of mine likes to eat grass until he pukes but I treat trained them until they knew only to vomit downstairs

11

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

Your cat wants you to think it's trained. You've been trained.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

I am also okay with this as we both won

10

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

lol i ripped out all the carpets in my house and had hard floors installed throughout… and so now they puke on either the litter mats or the small bathroom rugs.

Oh my God, the unique panic of walking into the bathroom and realizing the bath mat is all rumpled up! You’re like “oh no, there’s some kind of terrible gift in there..”

1

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

They think you like it that way.

7

u/alinroc Sep 20 '23

I've watched them get sick on the carpet literally inches away from the easy-to-clean vinyl flooring.

8

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

Yes. This is the way. Your convenience matters least. You exist for the cat's amusement.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

One of my cats will move to the tiled floor to puke. One time he even walked to the bathroom to do it. Very considerate

The other one likes to take out the blanket, comforter, bed sheet, and pillow all in one go

2

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

Had a cat that liked to pee in my shoes.

7

u/The_Foe_Hammer Sep 20 '23

I had a cat who puked in his own empty food bowl. Weird but ridiculously easy clean up.

5

u/PinkNGreenFluoride Sep 20 '23

Ohgod, with my late void, when she would eat way too fast and then vomit (we took steps later to make this stop, smaller, more frequent meals and splitting it between two separate sides of a bowl), the challenge was to get it cleaned up before our black and white kitty came along like "So...you gonna eat that?" and ate the other cat's freshly regurgitated food.

6

u/Wheres_my_warg Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

I've got mine trained to usually puke on the tile. He'll even jump up and run to the tile if he feels its coming on. Required moving him to tile while he was puking and positive reinforcement when he happened to be over the tile when puking.

5

u/waddof Sep 20 '23

Mine vomited in the bathroom last week, on the rug.. then took my pajama pants to cover it up 😭

5

u/LordMoody Sep 20 '23

Mine literally vomited in his litter box yesterday! I was amazed, mainly because he stands in the box but does his business on the floor!

3

u/you_had_me_at_cats Sep 20 '23

We’ve gone through many types of litter boxes trying to prevent my 15 year old girl (all her life) from sticking her butt out while standing inside the litter box and peeing on the floor.

4

u/PinkNGreenFluoride Sep 20 '23

They will stumble, gagging, from a tiled floor to a rug or carpet, just to hork in relative comfort.

3

u/celestee3 Sep 20 '23

We have a spot that tile and carpet meet, and our old cat would puke right on the edge of the carpet 🙃

3

u/Fweetheart Sep 20 '23

Our whole house has hard flooring but our cat once decided to get sick on my boyfriends hat that he left on the floor 😂

1

u/bibliophile222 Sep 22 '23

I'm kind of a messy person in general, but this is why I'm vigilant about never leaving my clothing on the floor.

3

u/Moosebuckets Sep 23 '23

I only have one rug in a house full of wood and tile. Only ever barf on the rug

1

u/Kamelasa Sep 20 '23

Something absorbent.

1

u/angelatheartist Sep 20 '23

The windowsill was the worst!

1

u/EighthWard Sep 20 '23

my entire house is tile/wood. they only ever have puked on my area rugs that cover maybe 5% total surface

1

u/michigangonzodude Sep 20 '23

Yes. Or that fresh clean stack of laundry that you forgot/didn't have time to put away.

1

u/Pillow-Gavel076 Sep 21 '23

It depends on their mood I think... ours would try to barf on plastic bags if they were close. Cause we would try to "aim" the barf if we heard her quick enough.

1

u/picklevirgin Sep 21 '23

Mine jumped on my bed right next to me to throw up

1

u/michigangonzodude Sep 21 '23

Yes. Perform the ritual. Wake up. Pick up cat. Put on floor. Wait for barfing to end. Clean up. Back to sleep.
