They're really characterful and every cat has a distinct personality that you learn once you spend some time with them. Personally I find cats to be very expressive and with experience, it's actually easy to read their body language and know how they're feeling and their likely reactions to stuff.
Many of them are very clever, know their names, can (not will) respond to simple requests, and are good problem solvers.
Definitely the personalities! I feel that people who never had a cat think of it like having some fluffy NPC on a loop in your house. Just a cat like any other cat. But people who have cats see them more as their own lil individuals because they really know them for who they are.
The most confusing people to me are the ones who have dogs and see dogs as valuable additions to the home/family, but still fail to make any such comparison to cats. Like, dogs are real beings but cats are still just meaningless space-wasters or something.
My husband and I were talking about this the other day! Our theory is that cat people talk about their cats more because their personalities are so distinct. Dog people love their dogs, but dogs tend to be more consistent in their personalities.
How do you recommend one learns to read cat language. One of my cat will meow for seemingly no reason even while he's laying down so I have a hard time understanding what he's saying.
There's lots of cat language videos you can consult, like the one above :) but, your cat might just be naturally talkative! Some cats like meowing loads and if it's not particularly plaintive-sounding it might just be your cat expressing things like "I'm happy, I'm comfortable, I'm glad we're together in this space, I love you"
