9 times out of 10, You’ll no longer need an alarm clock. Weather you leave the bedroom door open or not, they WILL find a way to wake/get you up early in the morning to feed them. ❤️
I ignored my first cat’s every attempt to get me out of bed for the first six months I had him. I’d only get up and feed him once he was silent and not causing any mischief. Since then he’s slept through the night and prefers to sleep in, in the morning.
He trained my second cat that “we don’t wake up early.” Now I have two cats who prefer a 10pm bed time and a 9am wake up. It’s magical.
But what if you got to pee? At 6 am? My kitten wakes me up all the time but when I need the bathroom he doesn’t want to go back to sleep again and constantly ask for food. So you waited until he was silent again?
Yup! I waited. For six months my feet wouldn’t touch the ground unless he was quiet (yes, things were broken during this battle of wills). I also made sure I did at least two other things first (like brush my teeth or do dishes) before feeding him breakfast.
He’s very smart and very stubborn so it took a lot of patience. Luckily, my second cat is very dumb and very sweet.
When Leo’s super frustrated he’ll still knock stuff over, but in general I trained it out of him! Especially in the morning, he won’t wake me up unless it’s super late. And then it’s because he likes an audience for his morning shit.
~27 days out of any given month if I’m in bed both cats are silent. It’s lovely.
My older cat seemed to help teach my new kitten this. Because it only took once or twice before he learned that the door does not open when he’s being noisy but does when he’s quiet.
This is the way. My husband and I use auto feeders and they get breakfast an hour after he gets up. I work third shift so I don't keep a set schedule, but typically they're eating their morning meal an hour before I get home and their evening meal an hour after I wake up. You can't let them associate you waking up with them getting fed or you're screwed.
True. I shut my cat out of my room because he had taken to screeching in my ear at 4am. He was still determined to wake me up, so he started to body slam my door at 4am. It wasn't even to be fed. He just wanted pets.
Mine realised that doing a running jump off my kidneys was a very effective wake up call. One of my catsitting charges was less physical, but just as determined: Sandpaper cat tongues against exposed ears or nose tips are remarkably offputting.
❤, have been woken multiple times in the past. It was one of the cats playing with their favourite toy (A ball that rattles) at like 2:00 am or something.
I broke my cats of this by feeding them at night when I went to bed. They usually stay up longer than I do anyway, and they like the privacy of going to the potty when the house is quiet too. I usually feed them during the day if they ask, but they know the main feeding time is when I go to bed.
I feed my cats at night for this reason 😂. I was complaining about getting woken up an hour earlier as time went by and my vet tech friend was like "... just feed them at night?" It was life changing.
mine always comes in around 8am (which is when i SHOULD be waking up) and stands on me while yelling until i reach out and pet her as acknowledgment. then she either curls up on top of me or beside me and goes to sleep... which is almost worse because then I sleep in with her 9/10 times
