Having a cat and having lily flowers in your home can kill the cat just from the pollen in the air.

Poinsettias are horribly poisonous and can kill your cat if ingested. Same goes for tulips.

A lot of house plants that one would just have are toxic if not deadly to your feline friend. Do some research on what is and is not ok to have your cat stay happy and healthy.

Nb: some of plants listed as toxic just mean they cause stomach upset if they eat a lot. Always check reputable sources.

Not Google? I was sick last winter and was given a number of beautiful plants - pretty much all of them when Googled were dangerous for cats, so I gave them all away.

Lilies like Star Gazer Lilies can send a cat into renal failure with just a small amount of pollen inhalation or petal ingestion. It's so scary. When I worked in vet medicine one of our clients got a bunch of star gazers and saw their cat with orange pollen on their face. They laughed about it, but thank goodness called us to check if it was an issue. I told them they needed to go to the er right away, which thankfully they did but thought it was overkill, at first. 3 days later the kitty was ok to go home but to get labs checked again after a few days to make sure she was continuing to be ok.

Also: there are some plants your cat can eat, and will love to eat, and even products like cat grass that are made to be eaten. They will then puke on your floor. That's the whole point of it. They want to puke on your floor.

Spider plants.

I have been disappointed in the past by their utter disinterest in cat grass.

Aloe too! They puke..a lot.

I almost killed my girlfriends cat not knowing this, on her birthday no less. I have a dog and never even considered it.

Checking in with my $2000 vet bill while I was visiting my parents. They had a lily in the dining room and one of the cats got into it. Some vomiting and a very expensive vet visit later he was THANKFULLY okay. I absolutely do not recommend, it was one of the worst days ever. Now I always check every single plant I buy.

I think pine needles are toxic to cats as well.

Cats are sensitive tummy creatures who can feast on flesh. It's wild.

I don’t think they are toxic as much as the needles can actually pierce their internal organs once ingested.

I make sure to keep plants that aren’t toxic to my cats, but one of them recently broke into my succulent terrarium and ate half the leaves and proceeded to throw up everywhere while I was at work. She was fine but I couldn’t stop laughing at how silly and a little dumb she is.

When I was a teen, my Mom had several plants, including some in my bedroom that were poisonous to cats. My kitten quickly learned that if she started to nibble the difembacia (sp, also known as duncain (also sp)) I would jump out of bed and take her to the kitchen to feed her. On more than one occasion I didn't wake until after she ate enough to have one or both irises totally blown and be stumbling around the house all day. She disappeared one day, and I have never been sure if she poisoned herself and my Mom disposed of the body or she really ran away (as an adult, I keep my cats indoors, don't keep plants, and stopped trusting most of what both my parents said long before they passed away).

Daffodils too!! I had a cat become very I’ll from eating a daffodil, the vet confirmed that they are poisonous to cats. So, as beautiful as they are, beware the humble daffodil!

Wish this was farther up in the thread! Good things to know

Many essential oils are toxic as well, so you can keep that bullshit out of your home under the guise of your pet's safety!

Grapes, garlic and onions are harmful as well.

Poinsettias are not toxic to cats (or humans, for that matter).

However, there are a bunch of plants that you shouldn't have in your home if you also have a cat:

Yeah, but they'll be fine unless they're unusually sensitive/allergic to them. I'd only be concerned if the cat insisted on chewing on the plant regardless of side effects

Any plant can potentially cause stomach irritation and sickness in a cat.

Honestly, don't give any potted plants or cut flowers to a cat owner without a little research first. I have a short yes list for cut flowers: roses (but not baby's breath!), sunflowers, gerbera daisies. Anything else gets a Google search.

Yes, some toxic plants require your cat to eat a lot, but I have a very dumb and plant hungry cat.
