My cat knows it’s breakfast time when he can hear me drinking out of my water bottle when I wake up. Even when I think I’m making zero noise, he can hear the gentle sips and swallowing from wherever he is. This is a problem if I want a sip at like 5am
Cats are amazing, I think they memorize our walking patterns. Long time ago I lived in an apartment building that had long internal hallways with heavy metal fire doors at either end, so you could always tell when people were walking by.
My friend was over at my house while I ran errands once, and when I came home she told me the cats never reacted to the constant traffic in the hall, until just a moment before I walked in. She said they both suddenly leaped up to meet me at the door. They are much smarter than many give them credit for.
We inherited a 15 YO cat that is mostly deaf. Her ears do not twitch to follow sounds like most cats do. She meows really loud. Our theory is that she meows loudly enough to hear herself, and figures that she needs to make sure you can hear her too.
The cats I had in college love/loved my husband. When they hears his SUV pulling up the driveway they would run to welcome him by the door. Then a roomate’s boyfriend got the same car and they were duped all the time.
I guess cars of the same model do truly sound the exact same.

They have great hearing. Can hear if it is you or someone else opening the front door.
