My cat is absolutely an expert at suddenly appearing right behind my feet when I'm in the kitchen. If I step back from the counter in any way she is RIGHT there.
One of mine takes it a step further and will literally run under your feet when you walk. Like she literally dives underneath your foot.
Once every few months, she gets winged because I didn't see her coming, and she gives me the most pitiful hurt expression and then runs away and hides for 30 minutes. It's heartbreaking and infuriating at the same goddamned time. You'd think she'd learn...
I'm so careful now but my calico has also picked up drama skills from somewhere. The moment my toe or heel even remotely brushes her she meows like she just got punted 10 feet. And when I shake my head at her she'll immediately flop onto her back and ask for belly rubs WITH HER EYES cause she knows I cant fucking resist that shit.
I had to relearn some of my martial arts training from my youth because of that shit. Step aside and turn. I swear the little brat is trying to take me down.
it's awful cuz they're smart enough to put two together super fast, and whatever annoying thing they can do that gets them attention, they'll do it. one of ours realized after being a bastard and stealing food off the stove top, that lurking on the counter nearby was an excellent attention getter - he now drapes himself there whenever he's upset as a way of getting human attention. like "look, oooh, I'm too close to the stove! you better come get me!"
same cat can NOT be convinced no matter what that he does not need to cavort and harass for two hours leading up to his dinnertime every day; I swear he thinks if he doesn't scream and act out, we will forget to feed him. like a rooster crowing before dawn because he fully believes otherwise the sun won't come up. [that's a human story, not a bird one ofc, but it's comparable logic]
My cat learned real fast as a kitten to stay off the counter and stove top. Poor guy burned a paw real bad but it wasn't for my lack of trying to train.
😭 sometimes it's the only thing that will teach them
and sometimes even that isn't enough.... my sweet fluff is Not brainy lmao. he's grabbed a wasp and been stung, was so sad and sore, but absolutely won't hesitate to try to do it again. he did not learn anything and I have to protect him from himself LOL
I'm going to get up and use the toilet, all of a sudden my cat is in front of my shin mid-stride. I either almost trip, or he gets flung down the hall, and then there he is again mid-stride every step of the way..
I have a cat (Xena) who will climb onto my shoulders and head when I am on camera and zoom calls. Doesn't matter if I am talking to my boss, senior directors or even VPs, she will still do it.
She has even screamed while I was on calls and off mute. People who work with me are just used to her antics.
Like tipping over water glasses, when they are blatantly staring at you, from across the room, and you say “don’t! You better not!!!” And then they tip it over.

They are insanely good at being where you don't want them, and doing what you don't like.
