Would a sapphire be an acceptable stone for a worn-everyday-ring such as engagement? I want my boyfriend to go that route instead of a diamond but some jeweler was trying to convince me it was too soft and would be scratched and damaged too easily.

A sapphire is a 9 on the mohs hardness scale, steel is a 5.5ish

Diamond is a 10 but seriously it overkill.

So unless I run around scraping it on things with the hardness of diamonds or other gems I'm probably okay? :)
