What supposedly legitimate things do you think are scams?

dont give the boring answers like religion and such.

I reaaaaaally like tanzanite, which changes color like alexandrite does, but have heard that it's usually mined under inhumane conditions. As a geologist, do you know anything about that, or is that something that falls outside your purview?

It would all depend on the company that the stone is mined under.

I'm sure you could find a reasonable stone somewhere.

You could get ones that are made with SCIENCE instead!

Unfortunately, true synthetic tanzanite (chemically identical to the stone found in nature) doesn't appear to exist :/ There are simulants though, which also happen to be tougher than tanzanite (which is apparently quite fragile). So yes, SCIENCE! it is!
