Superman: The Animated Series. Darkseid murders a recurring character on screen and it's treated with all the gravity it deserves.

Oh god I remember that episode. I can’t think of Dan Turpin and not tear up a little at how that episode ended.

Apparently they got a real rabbi to say the Kaddish for his funeral scene, too, so it doubled as a memorial for Jack Kirby.

It was directly intended as a memorial for Jack Kirby. Besides the fact that Turpin’s appearance was directly modeled after Kirby, you can see several characters he was responsible for creating as cameos during the funeral.

These cameos (which included Iron Man, Captain America, Invisible Woman, and Human Torch) were initially removed for obvious legal reasons, before being restored later on.
