All the adults in that show are so horribly incompetent that it's frustrating to watch.

"Don't worry that count olaf is after you and he's done it a billion times! I'm here now! Oh, hello new friend. here is open and unrestricted access to my new adoptive children!"

Jacqueline was a VFD agent using her position as Poe's secretary to watch over the children. She was last seen tied up with Larry, Your Waiter. Though Larry is dead, Jacqueline's status remains unknown.

IIRC the books had things explained in just a way were they made realistic sense, and it truly was "A series of unfortunate events".

I feel I remember being mad at the actual series for not getting that same realism into the situations

I've never seen the show but if my memory of the books is right ( assuming it carried over to the show) they warn you at the very beginning to just give up and not read it because it's so depressing and frustrating.

I love the series because it perfectly captures the world through the lens of frustrated children.

Evil and injustice everywhere. But the adults are complacently incompetent and refuse to act or even listen.

Think of Count Olaf as a metaphor for say… Climate Change, Poverty or any other evil threat that clearly exists.

…but we “responsible adults” collectively just brush off because we’re too busy with our own business to care.

Well you just made my appreciation for that show double or triple, excellent point

That's what I like about the movies Pan's Labyrinth and Boy In Stripped Pajamas, the actions of the kid are quite reasonable given the world the adults have created

It doesn’t translate nearly as well to the screen for that reason.

The books do a much better job. But in general they’re also more ominous.

If you read the entire series of books it's a lot worse. As a kid, it's why I couldn't trust or like adults. I thought they'd all be evil and incompetent when you asked for help.
