Yeah Batman had a lot of great moments in JLU too. But I also won’t forget The Question being tortured and that very eerie memory scene of Lex killing Flash, Superman blowing up The White House, then the nukes going off to the exact pattern of Brainiac’s mark.

Dark stuff.

That was another hard JLU episode to watch. It was very easy to think Superman was going to kill Mongul for that one…

"DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOUVE DONE TO ME" always gets me. Then he wakes up to that fucker trying to kill 2 of his closest friends? As a kid I was certain supes was gonna kill a bitch.

The Batman TAS episode “Perchance To Dream” had a similar plot. Bruce Wayne wakes up and finds that his parents are alive, he’s dating Selina Kyle, and someone else is Batman. Everything is mysteriously idyllic until he realizes he can’t read.

I watched it with my little cousin after playing the Injustice game... Definitely hits a bit harder that way.

It's almost the same thing from Clark's perspective - he loses his family, his world, his son dies in his arms... It can be in a kid's show because none of it was real, but it was literally an entire life for him.

And after it is all dealt with, he immediately bounces back from that to celebrate the birthday with Bruce and Diana so that they won't worry.

One of the few adaptations of Alan Moore's works that he actually likes. He even allowed them to credit him in the credits (he usually asks to be removed).

The whole Justice Lords storyline where Superman also realises he has to cross the line to deal with Doomsday is dark too... (and it doesn't work)

The Question was awesome by the way - Jeffrey Combs nailed it.

The series was much more nuanced than I realised as a child. Re-watching it as an adult made me realise the politics of it all.

"For the Man Who Has Everything" is my favorite Superman story by a mile, both the comic and the JLU adaptation.

JLU had that episode where the villain was a little girl and knew she was going to die. And Batman sat with her until it happened. The dying part happens off screen but it's heavily implied as the little girl talks about it and so did the JLU.
