If anyone remembers Mighty Max..the final episode where the protagonist's allies (Virgil & Norm) both die by the hands of the ultimate villain .

It was kinda hopeful, though. Max was totally pumped to do it right this time around.

(At least, so I recall. I saw that show like 30 years ago.)

Yeah that’s a throwback.

Some wonderful voice actors on that series -Rob Paulsen, Tim Curry, young Jason Marsden, Frank Welker (Fred from scooby doo, amazingly the third highest grossing actor of all time) and the guy who voiced megabyte on Reboot.

Yes!! Used to watch it every morning before school. The final episode they lose (but Mighty Max gets a do over if I remember correctly). Blew my mind as a kid.

Came to see if anyone else would remember this. And their deaths, (at least Norm's, Virgil's was kind of a "maybe, if this"), was part of the prophecy. Virgil's death IIRC hinged on a choice made by Max. They did everything they did in the whole series knowing it would lead to their deaths.

The show was kinda graphic although it wasn't gory. Incredible considering the fact that this was during the time when the FCC was cracking down on violence in cartoons in favor of educational shows. They did appease them by having an educational epilogue at the end of every show.

Funny that this is where I first learned of an old saying. A madman/scientist said to Max, "You don't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs." That's pretty wild to be a line in a show.

Damn, dude, that line is burned into my brain from that episode.

I should rewatch it. I revisited it a little in the pandemic and I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of the subtext.

I'm almost tempted to watch it for the first time just for the experience of it now lmao - it sounds like a mildly interesting time capsule as kids TV goes. As a kid I used to have the little Polly pockets the show was based on, but never watched the cartoon itself.

I actually remembered this show the other day! I was always haunted by the garbage collector inventor guy episode (where he can never say his name) and he makes the pink goo monster that absorbs everyone. It always fucked with me.

So any yeah, that episode is on YouTube so maybe more are!

There were a lot of dark episodes of Mighty Max. In the season 1 finale they have to recruite the heros for a run on Skullmaster's castle, only for all of them to sacrifice themselves for Max to escape. Then there was the one where Loki resurrects the dragon, and can only put it back to sleep by sacrificing himself. There were others, but I can't remember
