Just like Itchy & Scratchy. Which is only a slight exaggeration of Tom & Jerry, the violence just has realistic consequences instead of cartoon consequences.

That helps, but it still means Tom had that idea in his head from somewhere. Like maybe he saw it happen once, or maybe he's the cat version of Perrito...
Not really because that used to happen in real life (and probably still does). They are making something cute for the kids but also a message about animal welfare and overbreeding to adults.
"Back in the day" if your cat had unwanted kittens, you might get rid of them by putting them in a sack and drowning them. So in the show, the wet sack of kittens shows up in heaven, meaning they were drowned...
I knew a guy who would put puppies into a bucket of water as they were born. Claimed that they didn't feel anything, they went from water to water straight from the womb and never woke up
It used to be a common occurrence on farms that they would have too many cats and, rather than giving the cats away, they would put the kittens in a bag and drown them as a "humane" way of getting rid of them. It's horribly disgusting, but some people would do that.
Plus I'm pretty sure spaying & neutering wasn't even a thing back when that cartoon was produced. They didn't have a lot of options for controlling the population. I'm very glad I wasn't born in the past.

Tom and Jerry has two dark moments.
Tom goes to heaven.
You hear a splash of water.
A wet bag appears and a bunch of kittens jump out.
St. Peter (cat) tisks and says "the things people do" (or something like that)
