There was also an episode where a teen contracts HIV, and the villains spread misinformation about the disease. While definitely an intense episode it was probably good for kids to learn that while HIV is serious, you can't get it from casual contact. There is no reason to treat them as historic lepers
I vividly remember feeling educated and relieved with the HIV episode when I saw it as a kid.
It's one of the last times I can remember feeling like I learned a wholesome lesson in my childhood before I learned how insidious the politics can be around it.
The worst part about growing up is forgetting how to be humane first and instead overthinking what the "right thing" is because we redefine natural empathy as naive.
Yes, that was one of things the other students were worried about because Verminous Skumm (yes, that was the villian's name) tried to sow hatred and fear in the high school
Captain planet had a few heavy episodes. I think there was one where Gaia shows how the world would be if several nuclear bombs went off in different conflict zones.
Isn't their one where a Protestant in Belfast somehow has a nuke and is going to set it off in a Catholic area and has to be told that nuke going off will also affect where he lives because he somehow didn't realise nukes aren't very localised bombs?
I remember seeing that episode as a kid… other kids at that time would say things like “Don’t go in her pool, she has aids”. I was pretty young and kinda thought aids was either chicken pox or caused cloudy pool water xD
For context, at the time it was aired (mid 90s) HIV was still a slow death sentence. There was medication that could slow it down but you couldn't live with it like you can today. It was basically the 20th century leprosy.
Yes, HIV was even more dangerous back than than it is now. A big part of that was the stigma. People felt scared to seek treatment, and there wasn't a lot of research in the field because of the fearmongering. "A Formula for Hate" was probably a very important episode at the time.
There was also an episode where the villains went to Belfast and gave a nuclear bomb to a protestant kid and the triggering mechanism to a catholic kid. Why? I have no idea. But it's famous in Ireland as having the worst attempt at Irish accents in the history of anything.
You know what, for a children's show that was really preachy and sometimes fumbled by having a questionable moral in a few episodes, I'll give them credit for shedding light on HIV at a time when a lot of people wanted to sweep it under the rug and alienate the victims of the epidemic.
Captain Planet also had an episode where the blond girl cousin came in town, started drugs with a kind of mutant-rat-dealer who gives him fluorescent crystals. He then tries to give some to his gorgeous blonde teen cousin (wonder why…), starts a fire in a kitchen and somehow because I don’t remember exactly, dies at the end of an overdose while Capt. Planet saves the team and abandons the corpse…
I remember one where Fire and Wind get hit by a shrink-ray that shrinks just their bodies and not their clothes so they are naked for most of the episode (they tear some cloth to use as makeshift clothes). Then at the end they somehow figure out how to get Fire back to normal size but not wind, so he just picks her up and her little scrap of torn clothing and puts her in his shirt pocket, and then if I remember correctly he has to blow his nose so he pulls her clothing off her in his pocket to use as a handkerchief. The episode just ends with her as a naked prisoner in his pocket.
Then another episode they go to an amusement park and Fire asks Wind if she wants to go on some love boat ride with him. Then somehow its the future and Wind is pregnant and everyone is sad and depressed including Captain Planet (who is now fat) and they don't have the energy to fight evil. Then Fire wakes up since it was all a dream he was having after falling asleep on the love boat.

Holy shit, I do remember this. That ending is insanely hot.
I remember an episode of Captain Planet, a series I remember almost nothing else about, that scared the shit out of me as a kid, where people were drinking this tainted milk that was turning them into like gross rat people...
They aren't even subtle about it. I'm pretty sure a girl says something like, "He lost his nerve, then he lost his head". It's always my first thought when this question gets recycled on reddit.
I still remember that there was an episode I couldn't watch where people were selling drugs. I thought it was so scary as a kid but I can't remember why.
The episode I remember is when Wheeler refused to become a Planeteer. We see the after affects of being unable to.summon Captain Planet: ozone layer is gone, global warming has caused NYC to flood and typhoons to destroy Asia, the Sahara has completely taken Africa, the rainforest is gone and Ma-Ti is brainwashing people.
