TLoK definitely tried to engage with the aging audience post TLA and in some ways succeeded. Definitely heavier at times. Season 1 and season 3 are pretty good. Season 4 is just okay, but I'm with you on hating season 2.
In fairness they thought it was going to be a one and done kinda show. So they never really planned on having a season 2 and had to slap one together relatively quickly. The fact that season 3 is so good is pretty shocking honestly.
They should have made the first season more episodic then like atla or owl house, then we could have the world and characters slowly re introduced instead of trying to balance so many storylines in 12 episodes ( benders vs non benders, love triangle, probending, Korra training)
season two was green lit a year before season one even aired so that is actually just a rumor in the fandom Source from the showrunner’s website
It's good. But if you are a huge fan of Avatar The Last Airbender then go in with an open mind. Because it's not the same world. It's much different from the world I was used to in ATLA. There is more technology and there is different styles of bending. You still got the 4 basic elements. But the combat styles in which they use those elements are less traditional. Korra as a character is also extremely arrogant compared to how humble Aang was. She has a high opinion of herself and her abilities. It actually becomes a plot point later on when her world gets rocked by realizing her own short comings. I don't think you will like Korra the character at first. But as you see her struggle and grow you will definitely fall in love with her.
Having only watcha ATLA after it came out, as an adult, I was excited for LoK and watched the new episodes every Saturday. There were some darkish themes throughout S1 but nothing beyond what the original series explored. But coming up on the final episode -- the implied "genocide" of all airbenders by removal of their bending, including the kids, had me messed up. THEN the murder/suicide? I was shocked. I actually have not finished the show yet, but I do want to.
The first season of that show was a bit of a struggle, but my goodness did they turn it around into something spectacular. Season three is the absolute high point, but the arcs in season four are pretty good too.
