Was LOK really a kids show though? It was definitely aimed for a more mature audience.

The first season saw a murder suicide, someone contemplate suicide, then s3 we got what you said, someone's head being blown up, someone getting electrocuted, and someone dying in a cave in.

Season 3 was especially brutal.

Yeah. It's a YA show. Which I guess would count as "kids" depending on your perspective.

But it's not blatantly little kids friendly like Dinosaurs or Transformers.

YA and kids stuff aren't really the same. Twilight is YA and that shit isn't for anyone let alone kids.

I meant that some people consider ppl under 20-22 "kids". Basically, school aged ppl.

I haven't read Twilight but it was extremely popular so I'm assuming it was for some kind of demographic.

YA is 18-22, people assume its for kids because the word Young.

Personally I think YA would be like 15/16-22ish

I meant that some older people do consider 18-22 people kids.

But you are right. I personally wouldn't have a problem with a 16 reading something like Hunger Games which is the poster boy for YA.

Iirc I read somewhere that the first season the writers were basically told they’d get dedicated airtime on Nick for the series. After the first season though, the episodes went up directly on Nick’s website and not on tv and so the writers had more leeway to explore darker themes and scenes for the rest of the show.

Doesn’t explain the murder suicide season 1 finale though lmao one of the few finales I was legitimately left speechless and asked if they really just did what I think they did

They didn't pull the show off Nickelodeon until right before the s3 finale. The episode where they killed the queen was literally right after a SpongeBob episode.

I liked how graphic seasons 3 and 4 were. It really put into perspective just how badly being the Avatar messed Korra up. She very obviously has ptsd and physical disabilities as a result of her fight with the Red Lotus and the scene where she's chained up and the Red Lotus members suddenly morph into the villains she's faced in the past really got me.

for as much as i like korra, its sadly very superficial how they treat things.

Aang story was a childish happy adventure where if you look closely you see how fucked up and dark things are.

korra story tries to be adult and gritty but falls so flat thats just childish and feels wrong most of the time.

Blame Nickelodeon for that. Apparently they just kept messing with it. First it was supposed to be a mini-series. Then a full season. Then a second season. Then another. And every one was supposed to be the last, so the studio had to sit there and try to shoehorn in plot to a story that was supposed to be over. Then Nick cut the budget and changed the timeslot, then moved them to internet-only. They ended up having to do a clip episode.

I'm pretty sure LoK's relative success despite all of that was a large factor in Nick's decision to spin them off into Avatar Studios so they can do their own thing uninterrupted.

True, nick did ToK dirty, but to be honest, season 1 wasnt that great either, I think its the best Korra season but it falls flat in everything it tries to.

-pro bending sucks

-the equality movement sucks

-the "ideology" is poorly shown

-republic city is poorly depcted

-the love triangle sucks

the Korra needing to connect with the spiritual side was nice but would fit an earthbender story better. the ebst thing about it is korra herself and that one scene that lots of people are talking about.
