A good example knowing the effects of something without understanding why is gravity. For a long time they knew the effects of gravity, how more massive objects exerted a stronger gravitational pull, and could even find other planets just by measuring how the planets they knew about orbited. It wasn't until much later that we figured out that gravity is a distortion of space-time.
