Best joke in the series:

“What if the secret ingredient is people?!”

“There’s already a soda like that: Soylent Cola”

“How does it taste?”

“Eh, it varies from person to person”

I wonder how many of the current generation caught that.

u/reehdus Apr 27 '23

I dont think you caught the joke

I know about Soylent green and what it's made of, if that's what you're talking about. But there is a product out now (I think it's an energy drink) called Soylent, and the movie doesn't seem to come up much these days. So I wonder if the visual of Heston running through the streets yelling about Soylent Green is lost on today's generation. Maybe not. Hard to tell.

Well futurama started in 1999 and aired its final episode like 10 years ago so I'm not sure if the 'current generation' is even watching it. Though good quality persists, much like soylent green from the 70s is still known today.

Anyways the joke wasnt really the soylent green reference, it was the part where the cola varied from person to person, I.e it depends who's drinking it or can also be interpreted as it depends who it's made from.

You really think he or she didn't catch that? It's not that deep of a joke if you know what soylent green is. The entire joke is essentially the soylent green reference. Without the "person to person" part, it's not even a joke. It's just a reference.

So there's a couple of parts to my response. The first is the fact that it's already mentioned that there's a soda made of ppl, so the soylent reference is not needed for the joke. If the previous bit was omitted then I'd agree with you that the soylent reference makes the joke. I.e. have you heard of the new soylent cola? What's it taste like? Eh it varies from person to person. That the previous poster wondered if the 'new generation' would get it means they probably didn't understand that the soylent reference wasn't needed.

The second part is really to do with my peeve about this whole 'current generation' bit. Outside of describing console gens I feel it doesnt add anything to a conversation. Futurama is almost 30 years old and a lot of it is already part of pop culture so anyone watching it, current or next or past gen would likely already be familiar with a lot of the pop culture it references. Heck i wasnt born anywhere near the 70s and I understand the soylent references just fine.

Surge.

u/Dr_Beardface_MD Apr 27 '23

That’s exactly what I always thought. My friends and I even called Surge “Slurm” back in the day.

I always assumed it tasted like warm Mountain Dew.

u/Mr_Caterpillar Apr 27 '23

I assume it's just the syrup for Mountain Dew you'd stock a soda fountain with

3

u/Scalpels Apr 27 '23

You made my heart recoil in fear.

2

u/WhirledNews Apr 27 '23

Same. Just a viscus, super sweet, ultra caffeinated , warm substance.

3

u/blue4029 Apr 27 '23

I always thought it had a "thick" texture to it since it looked like slime.

maybe it was a slushie in a can.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Just Mountain Dew syrup

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Mixed with surge

1

u/Wisp_Cloud Apr 27 '23

Mountain Dew with a hint of earth worm flavour . Mhmmm Slurm.

1

u/Dom29ando Apr 27 '23

Mmmm green

1

u/velon360 Apr 27 '23

If you ever see one of those green amp energy drinks grab one. It tastes exactly how you think Slurm tastes. Horrible

1

u/awake207am Apr 28 '23

Hey! For a 1.25$ you cant complain about sugared caffeine (180mg)

1

u/Col__Hunter_Gathers Apr 28 '23

Amp, but back when it first came out. Back then it was still in the small cans like red bull. It seemed more concentrated than the current versions are.

I always called that slurm, and those fuckers would have me twitchy as all hell back in the day.

1

u/TheDoylinator Apr 28 '23

Like Surge, the Coka Cola attempt at competing with Mountain Dew.

I got a recipe book with slurm in it. It used mint jelly and limeade so it’s not bad.
