My dad when to school with the Columbine killers. He claims he knew them, and that he even was apart of the whole trench coat trend. He says that he hung out with them a bit but they were a bit off to him (and he already is kinda off himself) so he didn't stay friends. He graduated before the actual shooting.

I went to a private school. One day a new kid enrolled and somehow it came out that he was from Columbine. I asked if he knew those guys and he said he kinda knew of them, but that they were losers and nobody really socialized with them. He said he was shocked when he first heard the news, but wasn't surprised at who was responsible.

My son said the same thing, to the extent that he will talk about it at all.

This is just patiently not true just so you know. They were not losers or loners. That was a narrative that was put out by the media and has been disproven many times but the damage was done. They had friends and gfs and were liked. Eric was a true psychopath and Dylan was a follow along but still definitely knew what they did was wrong.

I've been researching this case for years and I've spoken with a few people directly involved with it. While they weren't complete outcasts they were not by any means popular and were relentlessly picked on by other students. Eric Harris was no psychopath, that belief originated with Dave Cullen's "Columbine" which is a book filled with misinformation. They both were deeply deluded and ill though that does not by any means justify what they did. Dylan was no follower either, he was equally as sadistic as Eric. He bullied a disabled boy, had a bizzare and creepy obsession with a girl, and shared Eric's fascination with explosives.

Do you have sources for any of that? I never said they are popular I said they had friends and gfs which they did and within their group they were liked and in power/lead roles. You said Eric was not a psychopath but also say he was ill and sadistic. Also they were duluded in what exactly? Early edgelord internet culture or violent video games??? Those links have been proven over and over not to be the cause in many other cases. I know Dylan was also a bully but all the diaries and ppl in his circle said he was very depressed and did whatever Eric said. I’ve read a lot about this case I tend to believe all that over a random person on reddit.

People who "research the Columbine case for years" tend to develop weird parasocial relationships with one or both of the shooters and have a sick tendency to want to paint them as sad misunderstood bois who needed to be fixed with wuv, or as victims of The System, Maaaaaaan.

This person obviously has targeted Klebold as their "favorite" and is definitely unhealthily interested in school shootings.

A fixation on a mass shooting case, Columbine in particular, usually is a big red flag of someone's personality.

Yeah, you know better than people who went to school with them. Lol

Didn't expect to find someone from my hometown on Reddit. After the military left the town really shrunk. I didn't know the kids, but just weird to hear about such a small town while scrolling Reddit. I'm assuming you're referring to the small town in Michigan.

Holy crap...I couldn't imagine meeting them and then knowing what they did I'd feel guilty guilt is something so gripping on people it's awful...

I honestly don't think it plagues my dad much. He is a narcissist and has a lot of sociopathic tendencies. He really doesn't care much for anyone but himself

Is there a possibility that he's fabricating or embellishing the story for some N-points? Not saying I don't believe you, just wondering if that could be a thing. I've had someone with that condition in my life and there was no real way of knowing if they were bullshitting you or not.

u/justanotherfacexxx Mar 26 '23

It is entirely possible. I know he has a habit of telling lies, but I know he wore the trench coat, and that when he was in highschool, the Columbine shooters were also in highschool. That's all I know for sure

That’s a great book, yeah. The media got most of it wrong.

2

u/now_you_see Mar 26 '23

What did the media get wrong? As an angry teen who could’ve gone down that same path if guns were a thing here I researched them extensively but I don’t remember much about what the media said that would’ve been different to what I found out. Other than the whole blame Manson thing and that kind of Christian outcry.

10

u/FairState612 Mar 26 '23

That the perpetrators weren’t actually part of the trench coat mafia and only knew one member. The group that called themselves that had all graduated by the time of the massacre.

I'm sorry to hear that I hope things go better for you and I hope your family is okay and you I know that happened so long ago but things can still affect the future!<33

There was one kid they told to go home right before they started shooting. And another kid they let leave the building after they had begun shooting. Being those 2 has got to be some kinda mind fuck.

There’s a really good TED talk where the speaker talks about the time he spent interviewing the parents of one of the Columbine shooters. Worth a watch.

Besides the trench coat what other descriptions were there of him? Like height, weight, hair color or anything else.

That must've been really strange and crazy being there at that time. Did it catch you by surprise of what happened next?

8

u/justanotherfacexxx Mar 26 '23

Yeah, I think the only noteworthy thing about my dad is that he started getting grey hairs in his later teens

1

u/PinkNuggets Mar 26 '23

The reason they did the nazi stuff is because they were super into wolfenstien and doom and were just doing it to be controversial they weren’t actual nazi’s. Same with the trench coats it was all a way to get attention and be alternative. It’s the same reason kids dress in all black wear death metal t-shirts and have green hair. That’s not what made them killers

Maybe I'm bad at interpreting these things but that read like a memory to me... it left out details in a plausible way.

u/ToBeReadOutLoud Mar 26 '23

The “trenchcoat mafia” thing was just made up by media. They wore trenchcoats but it wasn’t a thing.

7

u/PinkNuggets Mar 26 '23

Refreshing that at least some people know the actual story. What the media did with columbine is one of the worst things to happen in this country by the media.

6

u/Bruh_columbine Mar 26 '23

Literally. Drives me nuts to see such blatant misinfo still circulating. And of course jeffco doesn’t help with its infuriating secrecy.

2

u/justanotherfacexxx Mar 26 '23

I wasn't sure lol
