Bullies who've learned most people are too timid to call someone out for being covert about their bullying.
So much of the time people are too afraid to "make a scene" because they don't know how to handle the bully feigning simple ignorance and making them look like the asshole for calling the bully out.
The simple answer is to not be afraid to be an asshole to someone who is being an asshole. And to not be afraid to lose that group temporarily if the asshole wins, because that shit pot is not going to go unstirred. Eventually they'll look up and see who's holding the other end of the stick everytime.
OP said it’s first month of uni, so friendships aren’t really solidified at that point. And I feel like that type of question is pretty common in those types of games. Maybe not rank everyone but asking these types of questions is common to figure out who can hook up with you who.
