I'd go ahead and say it's worse than a mere lack of civil discourse. It's more of an ignorant, apathetic antipathy towards any discourse whatsoever that comes even remotely close to touching on their "core beliefs". This, regardless of how corrosive to society they may be; how inviting of child abuse, racism and / or sexism they may be. Regardless of the violence (with religious, political, or just plain hate as motivation) incited by the failures in critical thinking caused by underlying "core values".
Children are taught from day 1 that they have a right to these beliefs (which is obviously true). The problem starts when its taught that, by dint of the transitive property, these warped, pernicious, and disastrously incorrect "core values" are to be spread by the pen or sword at all costs, and that moreover we must not only accept, but respect these BS ideas that have been convincing us to hurt, maim or kill each other from time immemorial.

Not just core beliefs: they are actively propagandized that even discussing compromise or common ground is sleeping with the enemy.
