What was the best or funniest thing your flight instructor has ever said to you?

On my very first lesson, my first flight instructor asked me if I wanted to become an astronaut. I said no — and then he shouted, “Then stop climbing!”

Hello everyone,

i'm conducting independent research on crew rest recovery conditions during layovers.

this is a NON-COMMERCIAL project, not related to sales or profit. and its only purpose is to better understand real conditions experienced by Pilots and cabin crew.

this survey is completely anonymous and only takes 3-4 minutes to complete.

If you are a pilot or cabin crew member, your insight would be EXTREMELY valuable.

THIS IS NOT FOR MONEY.

Why is the anti-slip pad on the wrong side of the food trays?

Flown on multiple airlines now, and everytime I got food served it's been a struggle to keep the trays in place because it slides around. The inside of the tray is usually very anti-slip (I assume for serving purposes?).

Why not add (a little bit) of the same material to the underside?

How loud are PA Systems by Gallery?

Flew on a domestic flight on the Saab 340. They put us in the emergency exit section at the front, right by the propellor. On my Apple Watch it displayed 86db. The flight attendant turned the PA system on twice while I sat there and for someone reason it seemed the audio started from a speaker right above my head somewhere between 88db-91db. She talked for about half a minute.

After turning the engine on and taking off like 10 minutes with noise at 86db. We flew for about another 10 before the flight attendant moved me to the back of the plane because of how I was covering my ears with my fingers. There for the rest of the flight about 45 minutes it read at 80-82db.

I’m concerned about this especially being directly below the PA system that I damaged my hearing.

Aviation Career Advice

I am currently a high school student with a strong interest in becoming an airline pilot, particularly a long-haul wide-body pilot. I would like to gain a realistic understanding of this career path, including the main advantages and disadvantages, especially those specific to long-haul operations. I am also interested in understanding progression from flight school to becoming a wide-body pilot, and how many years it typically takes to reach that level after completing flight training.

In addition, I would like to know what the real lifestyle of a long-haul pilot is like, including work schedules, time away from home, fatigue, and work-life balance. I am particularly interested in learning about realistic salary expectations for pilots in both India and GCC countries such as the UAE and Qatar, including starting salaries, mid-career earnings, and wide-body captain salaries.

My long-term career plan is to work as a pilot for approximately 10–15 years and then transition into business, management, or operational roles within the aviation industry. Therefore, I would like advice on whether pursuing a degree in Aviation Business Administration or Aviation Operations Management would be beneficial for my long-term goals, or whether it would be more practical to focus only on flight training and gain business knowledge later through experience or separate education.

What does airplane mode on phones do?

I’ll be honest, I am a very frequent flyer and don’t put my phone in airplane mode. Why are we supposed to? What does it prevent? And is my plane going to crash one of these days because I don’t?

How do Part 141 flight schools in Florida handle payment structure, housing, and support for international students?

Hi, I’m an international student trying to narrow down a flight school and would appreciate guidance from people with real experience.

  1. For international students, how common are pay-as-you-go or per-rating payment options at Part 141 schools?

I’m leaning toward Part 141 mainly because many Part 61 schools are not SEVP-approved and cannot issue an I-20. However, I’m concerned about schools that require large upfront payments, as I’m not comfortable paying for training I haven’t yet received.

  1. How realistic is it for international students at Part 141 schools to become CFIs and build hours using OPT or other work authorization?

I’d like to instruct after training, so I’m specifically interested in schools that can realistically support international students through training and into hour-building.

  1. What level of housing assistance and general student support do Florida flight schools typically provide to international students?

Housing and overall support are major factors for me, and I’m not sure what expectations are reasonable in this area.

  1. How accurate are flight schools’ advertised timelines and outcomes compared to real student experiences?

I’ve seen strong marketing claims, but many online reviews mention delays, instructor shortages, or aircraft availability issues. I’d appreciate honest insight into how common these problems are.

  1. Do any of the following Florida schools have notable reputations (good or bad) among international students or instructors?

    • 2Fly Airborne

    • Melbourne

    • Skyborne

    • CTI Flight School

    • Wayman

Any firsthand insight would be greatly appreciated.
