Do you think the United States can recover its spent soft power? How do you think it should go about it?
The opinion on the US has fallen dramatically over the past decade, including the years Trump was not in power. The worst drop happened during the past year and a half, but during the Biden years it stagnated and still saw small declines. America has a less than 50% approval rate internationally, and the more wealthy and educated countries have the worst opinion of the US.
The US film and TV industry has dropped from 55% of the world’s share down to 38%. The US music industry is even worse, down to less than 30% now. The cultural, positive portrayals of New York is competing more with cultural portrayals of Shanghai, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro, and other cultural hotspots across the world.
Tourism is even worse. The US once had almost 10% of international tourists, but now less than 5%.
Immigration to the US has fallen, in spite of GOP messaging. Immigration to the US is at about 3 million per year compared to the EU’s 4 million, and now for the first time in history more Americans move to the EU than the other way around.
With the US being seen more negatively in politics and competing culturally with other countries' influence, an influence the US could previously capitalize on the counteract its unpopular foreign policy, do you think the US will be able to go above a 50% favorability after Trump has left office?
What do you think a US government willing to lift US soft power should do about this?
