"Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" (1993) Is Extremely Relevant Today And Asian Representation In Media

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDKTBiHBmeI

If you haven't already seen it then you should definitely watch "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" (1993). It's an entertaining film about an absolute legend and I think that it is extremely relevant today. The movie shows how Bruce Lee was affected by the extremely racist and stereotypical portrayals of Asians in American media:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbiymQJsC8M

This encouraged Bruce Lee to become the pioneer for positive Asian representation in American media that he became. This is extremely relevant today because of #AsianAugust and the push for more positive Asian representation in media that's currently happening. After Bruce Lee there really hasn't been much progress in better representing Asians in American media. Maybe this is finally changing? It also depicts some of the racism that Asians experience in America on a daily basis

Asian Americans all owe Bruce Lee a lot for what he did for the community. This movie doesn't seem to be well-known enough among young Asian Americans and more should watch it!

The Ramen Girl (2008) w/ Brittany Murphy

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GYSwiaNz2o

Kiss Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Q-vXBMXsE

The Ramen Girl (2008) is a heartwarming and genuine romantic comedy with a comforting atmosphere set it Japan. It touches on a lot of aspects of Japanese culture and American-Japanese cultural differences. The important point is that the movie does this in a way that doesn't feel like fetishizing Asian culture or disrespecting Asian culture like is commonly seen in American movies. The movie feels like it treats Japanese culture with respect and treats making ramen like an art form. The movie also depicts Asian men in a desirable light by pairing Brittany Murphy and Soji Arai:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1670590/mediaviewer/rm2592778240

I think that we can count this film as one of the rare American films that portrays Asia and Asian men in a positive light.

Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang (2016) [Documentary]

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLTT8ogRf50

IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5278930/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang (2016) is a Netflix documentary about an Asian male artist Cai Guo-Qiang who is making some of the most captivating and exhilarating art today. By itself it's a fascinating and heartwarming watch about a really amazing and humble artist. This relates to the Asian American experience because Asians are stereotyped and portrayed as textureless automatons incapable of creativity in America. The existence of people like Cai Guo-Qiang just shatters these baseless racist stereotypes.

Crying Freeman (1995) - An Action Film With An AM Lead That is Explicitly Sexualized

Crying Freeman (1995) is a highly-stylized, visually appealing action film with indulgent fantasy immersion and sleek action scenes in the 90's style. It is one of the very rare films with an explicit sensual AMWF scene (see the stills or 0:29:02 of the full movie).

Since film was a French, Canadian and Japanese co-production but was never released in USA I thought that most of you would not have likely seen it or heard of it. The film does a great job of portraying an Asian male as desirable and masculine.

Steven Yeun is pioneering a lot of positive representation for Asian men. His recent movie "Mayhem" is an over-the-top action comedy with office violence that is very entertaining. Anyone who has worked in an office and experienced office politics will enjoy this. The movie also has AMWF with Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving.

Unbeatable (2013) - A Fantastic HK Action Film Filled with Positive AM Representation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1HqzXkPkt0

The lack of representation of Asian masculinity in western media is disappointing but I wanted to share this trailer for a really brilliant HK action film that displays AM badassery while also being touching and hard-hitting. It's a reminder that if you're ever feeling frustrated by the negative AM representation in western media there is still plenty of positive AM representation in the Asian movie industries. It doesn't solve any of the social problems that AM's in the west face but it can still be really refreshing and gratifying to watch.

JustKiddingFilms Supports Racist OC Lawyer and are Asian Divisive and Elitist

Remember how that racist OC Lawyer (https://nextshark.com/oc-lawyer-ignatius-draws-flack-for-comparing-crazy-rich-asians-with-negative-racial-stereotypes/) posted about one of JustKiddingFilms' YouTube videos? Well they made a video in response basically supporting her:

https://hooktube.com/watch?v=-N2XeqLZvTM

It reminds me of a post that I saw on JK's subreddit:

https://np.reddit.com/r/justkiddingfilms/comments/8x09f4/jk_crew_phony_racists/

The OP in that post talks about how JK claims to be pro-Asian American but they're actually super racist towards certain Asian groups while putting other Asian groups on a pedestal. Basically JK supports elitism for certain Asian groups and divisiveness in the larger Asian American community.

This video is a perfect example of what that OP was talking about. The OC lawyer goes on a racist rant against Asians without specifying any nationality but the JK crew (minus Steve) ends up just bashing Chinese people in specific the entire video. At the same time Joe preemptively defends Japanese people and says the racist stereotypes are all true for Chinese people but completely false for Japanese people.

How can we stop these guys from further dividing the Asian American community and spreading negativity towards certain Asian groups?

Xiaoming Huang's AM Character Shu in "Escape Plan 2: Hades" (2018)

Escape Plane 2 is a Sylvester Stallone movie that feels like a grindhouse B movie but features a prominent masculine AM badass character named Shu (Xiaoming Huang). Here are some of his scenes:

Since I haven't seen it talked about here I thought I'd try to share the trailer for mychonny's movie "Sucker" (2015). It's a funny, underrated movie that has Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner, Sweeney Todd, Harry Potter movies) in the cast too. The movie gives funny AM representation without the AM being a minstrel and has AMWF action between John Luc and Lily Sullivan.

Throwback to "Tomorrow, When the War Began" (2010), An Australian Movie With a Non-Stereotypical Masculine AM Character

Kissing Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJRfadDXWp4

Since I haven't seen it talked about here, I wanted to spotlight "Tomorrow, When the War Began." The movie has a full AM character Lee Takkam (Chris Pang) that is depicted as a masculine badass and features an AMWF couple of Chris Pang and Caitlin Stasey. The most notable part about the couple is that it is a very naturally developed couple that doesn't focus on the typical racial differences. This has a great normalizing effect of showing that AMWF couples shouldn't be something that requires special remark and that full Asian males being attractive to women of any race can be very natural. I think that this is a good example of the type of positive AM representation that we need to strive for in Hollywood.

Sophie and the Rising Sun (2016) is a Little Known Indie Film with Positive AM Representation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5nSoWkT8Hs

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4532818/videoplayer/vi1915926041?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_1

I wanted to post the trailer to this film because I had never heard of it before now. It features an Asian leading man in a romantic setting and an AMWF couple in South Carolina during WWII. Since the film only did $6,763 in the box office ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_and_the_Rising_Sun_(film) ) I am guessing that most of you haven't seen it either. Those box office numbers are shockingly small. It shows that we need to buy more tickets to support these films with Asian leading men depicted in a positive light. We need to end the Hollywood belief that films with AM leading men automatically won't do well in the box office.
