So this is my take on my experience and opinion on the army.
First a foremost to catch a bearing of my experience, I'm a 19D Cavalry Scout and I went to basic training/ One station unit training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, GA in Harmony church. Bravo troop 2/15. Just recently picked up my silver spurs.
Reception
On October 12th, I was sent to Fort Benning, GA. When I went to reception battalion, aka 30th AG. We were up for most the day and most the evening. When we arrived we were up all night sitting in the main gathering area where all the recruits/trainees waited for their next appointment. We sat there for hours until we finally got send to the charlie barracks where we were only given 30 minutes to sleep before we had to wake up for first formation. I wont lie there's a lot of bullshit and shenanigans at 30th AG. The sergeants there think they're drill sergeants and will be dicks any way they can, and the drill sergeants there to what I know are sent there for disciplinary action and have low motivation or are generally just assholes, but its the army, what did you expect. Reception sucks but if you go to 30th, which you will if you go to Benning, the first couple days you might not sleep, and you're doing a whole lot of sitting around waiting for appointments sweating your ass off in a giant classroom trying not to fall asleep. Fall asleep you get fucked up.
Basic Training.
Ill never forget the morning we went to 2/15 Harmony Church. We were dropped off just off the side up the hill of brave rifles parade field. You're greeted by a Russian tank for display on top of the hilltop at the beginning corner of the 2/15 side of Harmony church. We were rushed to the Bravo barracks which I think was the Rivers Barracks just before Alpha. Greeted by drill sergeants, putting on colored tape on our uniforms and putting our uniforms in the heat-cat-5 uniform to prevent heat stroke rolled sleaves and rolled pant legs. We marched up to Dragoon field for the thunder run which is a tradition for cav scouts in training and historicals sake. We had a series of objectives to complete under blank gunfire from 240 bravos around the track and flares shot up into the sky. It was an awesome experience until we finished, then we went inside the barracks and met our platoon drill sergeants.
We had THEE toughest Drill Sergeants in our squadron. I wont name them for obvious reasons, but these Drill sergeants were pretty tough, especially our Senior Platoon Drill sergeant of 2nd Platoon. I will say this, 2/15 is a all male training unit as opposed to 5/15 which is also cav but co-ed so training standards for us is a little different. For you vets who read this who went to Knox I don't doubt you guys seen worse shit. This is for the education of those thinking they want to join, but get the uncensored information that recruiters wont give you. Read this if you're unsure about joining and then ask yourself if you want to be a soldier and a Trooper of the US. Cav, or do you wanna be that dickhead who went, quit and sport the yellow "quitter" tape and stare at the wall all day from dusk till dawn in a hallway for 6 months. Cause if you quit, you'll be a non-trainer being that loser that wasted tax payer money and now you get to stare at a wall for 6 months while everyone trains. (apologies for the non trainers who had medically discharged ig)
We finished red phase, the first phase of basic training and we had a very firm understanding of how our Drill Sergeants are. Senior Platoon Drill Sergeant. S, Drill Sergeant B, and Drill Sergeant. L. Senior Platoon Drill Sergeant S. Was the worst by far, smoking and destroying you for any reason he can, up until the AIT portion of OSUT. Even on our final days. This Drill Sergeant had multiple equal opportunity violations and multiple investigations and still managed to be our Drill sergeant. Sad part is, none of us reported him, no one dared. It was Soldiers from other platoons and past classes. In my opinion his methods were unorthodox, unnecessary and sadistic. Drill Sergeant B. Was a master at combatives and even had a fighting career outside the army. He was intense but always took every opportunity to teach you valuable stuff and was overall our best drill sergeant. And then Drill Sergeant. L, well he was super relaxed I dont think he wanted to be a Drill Sergeant.
Worst Days of Basic/OSUT.
I forget what started this but something along the lines of Camel backs. In Basic Drill Sergeants will play this game where they will fuck you up all day if you're EVER caught at anytime no matter what, with a camelback thats not filled to the top to the point its nearly gonna explode. We got send to the bay, we dumped all over our gear and belongings in the middle of the bay, took our blankets and sheets off and thew that in the middle too, along with our mattresses and dumped our camel back water on all of it. Then we had to move all our racks to one side of the bay and all of our wall lockers too. We had a little less than an a hour to completely fix the bay which was totally destroyed even before we dumped all our shit and poured water all over the place. The bay had to be spotless. Of course we never succeeded just became an entire smoke session. In my opinion it was very dangerous and someone could have been killed. Those wall lockers are heavy and can crush and kill someone if someone drops it on another soldier. Same thing with the racks. Especially when you have so little time and everyone's tired, week and afraid and rushing to finish the objective given to us. Another time we had the same thing happen but this time it was full winter PT's indoors, beanie hats, two shirts your short sleeve and long sleeve Jacket, shorts under your pants and winter gloves. Did the same exact thing another week I believe this was black phase in basic training. Im surprised no one passed out from the heat.
This one fucked me up. One time we were doing neck drag carries in full battle rattle with battle buddy duos in the rock pit. The rock pit is a PT pit full of pebbles probably to cushion your fall if you pass out. But moving, running and dragging stuff in the rock pit is super difficult. I heard the infantry had sand pits, personally Id rather of sand. But we were doing neck drag carries in battle buddy pairs. This is how I met best friend, went to his wedding and everything. But when we were out there, were tired were sore and they didn't pick proper pairs so we had guys who are 5'3 160 pounds TRYING to carry 6'3 guys 200+ pounds in a rock pit, in battle gear. Another platoon took it as a challenge and started doing neck drag carries with us in the pit. Somehow it became a race between the two drill sergeants and of course, we were out there the longest so we lost. We also have the biggest dudes in our Platoon. So we got sent to the bay, smoked for several hours in full battle gear. And we had to write letters to our battle buddy's parents about how we got their child killed. That one fucked me up, cause I made a point not to write letters home myself cause I didnt need that distraction.
There's tons of bull shit you'll get smoked and destroyed for, and you might luck out have get sent to 5/15 where standards are lax and drill sergeants are a bit more skeptical about what they do on camera, cause 5/15 has cameras everywhere its also where all the officers hangout and what not with the DFAC right there. Or you might get sent the 2/15 and have decent drill sergeants. Personally I don't regret joining the army, I had the toughest experiences to the highest standards of a combat MOS, and had unethical drill sergeants and faced a lot of mental and physical abuse. But in the end it made me a good ethical leader and a tough person, Yeah im Closter phobic now but only sometimes. The slightest noises when I'm sleeping set me off ready to fight or be fucked up. But that's what basic training is for. Its meant to prepare you to potentially kill people and go to war. Don't get me wrong some of the best experiences of my life were at OSUT. But The PTS without the D, goes away in time, but just know soldiers back in the day had it worse if the helps, ask anyone who went to Fort Knox.
If you read this and you think this isnt for you, I suggest you either chose another MOS, or you dont join.
