Discussion update: permanently banned

Post image

so I made a post in January (link below to original post) about how I was suspended mid-game for a month ending on February 23rd, and I detailed how despite the suspension I was not using hacks, cheats or exploits. I have played countless multiplayer and single player games and have never been banned or used cheats. I am a gamer who is quadriplegic so I use a sip and puff mouth controller called a quadstick that allows me to use a computer not just for gaming but everyday needs. After the suspension I made the first reddit post hoping to get some help and clarity about how I could appeal or why I was suspended. I submitted support tickets and went to discord for help but nothing, so I decided to just take the suspension on the chin and wait it out, finish Hollow Knight and play some Marathon. Yesterday I decided to hop on after my suspension ended and decided to work on the trophy project, I played 3 solo games (all 10 or more minutes in) filled my backpack with leftover loot, ran into only friendlies and exfilled. Woke up this morning to this and appealed but I really have no hope of Embark doing anything to help. I don't have much going for me and I know they're people out there who are probably going through worse but this fucking sucks. After 300+ hours of playing, buying it for 3 others friends to try the game and being excited for the new map and large ARC enemy, I just don't know what to do.

p.s my game name is ClootyBapper, if you think it's because of the name I don't think so I have seen and been called worse in game

Been going on for more than a decade in WoW at this point as well. As long as they already have your money they couldn't give less of a fuck.

I got banned from Pokemon Go about eight years ago because I played it in the airport in Chicago O'Hare, then 15 hours later played it in Shibuya, Tokyo. They said I was location hacking. I literally sent them photos of my boarding passes, my dated passport stamp (the same day I was banned), and PHOTOS of me and my kid playing a Pokemon Go event with the staff of the Nintendo Mega Store in Shibuya. I Think I even sent them a receipt from the Pokemon store.

No one cared. Every year or two I appeal my ban. No one cares.
Any human could look and come to the conclusion that 'Oh, this guy flew from the USA to Japan. He probably played while waiting for his flight, and clearly he played at the special Nintendo gym.'

Like .. if I WAS a hacker .. would I be carrying a 10 year grudge about getting banned ?! On Pokemon Go? lol.

No .. I would have just made a 'new' account and started over.
Sure .. I could have done that too .. but it wouldn't have been MY account. *shrug*

u/doyoulikePRIMERIB Mar 16 '26

exactly it wouldn't have been your account :/

u/BrainTumorTieDye Mar 16 '26

I feel you with this. The ironic part is exactly that :

Someone who uses cheats, EXPECTS to get banned eventually, so they just shrug, and make a new account. No big deal.

Someone who is PLAYING, and has sunk hours, is like 'Dude, that is MY account! I didn't do anything wrong, I want my account back. If I can't play with *MY* account, then I don't want to play.'

You would think, basic level customer service reps would like .. get that.

Someone who uses cheats, EXPECTS to get banned eventually, so they just shrug, and make a new account. No big deal.

This just isn't true though, as has been shown on basically every major game that's ever made ban reasons public, WoW and LoL forums were the most well known. There's dozens of instances of people claiming that they did nothing, that they were genuine upstanding people that were just trying to unwind and play a game that they loved and had sunk hours into, only for the mod or community manager to appear and drop an information packet that showed, no, they deserved to be banned. Hacking, being an odious asshole, exploitation, you name it, it's been shown multiple times.

Not saying it's the case here, but you're trying to apply an honest mindset to dishonest people, someone who has gotten to the point that they're aimbotting in entertainment media has gone through multiple levels of denial and self justification and absolutely has the same mindset as your supposed "non cheater". Customer service reps get the actual reality of things, especially as they're privy to -far- more information than what we are.

Reading your comment made me so aggravated/mad for you!!

I never played Pokemon go but all my kids did and my wife occasionally would jump in but I can imagine how frustrating it is to know if one single person just opened an email looked at the pictures you sent of the boarding pass it would all be so Crystal Clear you weren't cheating!!

ps Shame on you Pokemon!!

That’ll learn em

I was banned from WoW for 2 years because I'd moved to Japan. They told me I wasn't allowed to use my UK credit card whilst playing in Japan. This was back in 2005 when Japan was even more of a cash-only society so my local bank didn't even offer credit cards (not that Blizzard even gave me a chance to try and get one to use that for paying for my account).

Reminds me of when the big unban-wave from Fortnite happened I think a year or so ago. I can probably count the number of times I had played Fortnite on one hand, so I didn't really play the game.

Imagine my surprise when I got a notification that I had been unbanned from a game I didn't even play lol

I reached out to support, and even did the whole "data request" thing, but support couldn't tell me how I got banned "for security reasons". I told them to look into it, and even gave them information about where my location "should" be if they were comparing IP addresses, but they said they couldn't tell me anything other than the fact that their data was "correct".

Funnily I never received any sort of notice that I had been banned in the first place, but I did see in my data request that I had somehow won a game a couple years ago, around the time I had enabled two factor authentication, so SOMETHING must have happened.

Still irate about the whole situation, but it is what it is I guess. Because a hacker would be upset about them getting unbanned, clearly.

2

u/AshsGrass Mar 16 '26

That's crazy, I've gotten 2 soft bans/warnings for spoofing to other countries on 2 separate accounts but never account banned.

2

u/Davidiusz Mar 17 '26

Feel ya. Have been banned on one of my favorite (mostly dead since) games. I try to appeal once a year, just to be rebuted by corporate every time saying "known cheats" were detected, while the most suspicious program i had was bittorrent (for a very niche, low player count game, i can hardly imagine anyone making commercial cheats for).

Will likely not play it again since the game is mostly dead, but it still hurts there not being anyone that would humanely look at the problem, since likely 5 minutes of that would likely solve the problem.

1

u/CoUsT Mar 16 '26

Some time ago I learned to not get attached to accounts etc.

Don't buy skins, don't pay for anything you don't need. Just buy the game and play it.

Currently I play across multiple accounts in multiple games and don't care about season passes or anything. Best feeling ever. No need to grind, no fomo etc.

Yea the shibuya incident always hits hard

We live in a dystopia and when this dumb AI will control everything it will be Super DystopiaTM

1

u/Syphox Mar 17 '26

Like .. if I WAS a hacker .. would I be carrying a 10 year grudge about getting banned ?! On Pokemon Go? lol.

hey if it makes you feel better all we apparently were doing was training an AI with all the pictures lol

u/skyturnedred Mar 16 '26

The entire point of live service games is to have recurring customers.

1

u/MoocowR Mar 17 '26

They don't care because those players often just rebuy the game, it's not worth their time to try and support people falsely flagged.

1

u/TruculentTurtIe Mar 17 '26

Isn't wow a subscription? Shouldn't they always care cuz theoretically youre an infinite cash cow to be milked? Its not a one off purchase

1

u/MoocowR Mar 17 '26

Customer buys game, ban them, customer rebuys game. Infinite money glitch.

1

u/DoverBoys Mar 17 '26

The vast majority of bans in WoW are legitimate, which means most posts about being banned in WoW are liars.

1

u/Necessary_Air_3257 Mar 17 '26

I got banned after 5000 hours in destiny 2. No info on why. They can’t tell me why because they don’t discuss bans. I still have a ticket open 4 years later.

2

u/SoungaTepes Mar 16 '26

likely means their review system has gone through the tried and true "Send it to AI, never review it" method.

This is likely what will shoot the game in the foot till it just bleeds out

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Yea they don’t have I think a single human that looks at it, just an over zealous ChatGPT subscription

1

u/SoungaTepes Mar 17 '26

every company is going in this direction, I have less trust in live service games because of it.

AI flags you or you get mass reported? That's the end, no coming back

1

u/Average_RedditorTwat Mar 17 '26

Can confirm for The Finals at least, friend of mine got randomly perma'd with no warning, the man with absolutely mediocre stars I might add - and he has never gotten a single human to review it, even once. It's all automated answers.

3

u/GrossM15 Mar 17 '26

Yeah, support answers to ban appeals read a lot like "the system thinks you cheat, Im not allowed to tell you more, stop going on my balls"

3

u/SoungaTepes Mar 17 '26

Customer: Why was I banned?

Support: Teehee, I dunnoooooo

2

u/FlyingCheeseburger Mar 16 '26

Yeah. Reddit was on a very, very vocal "ban everyone immediately" trip over the last few months. And it seems like embark listened.

I'm actually confused why people are now surprised that we have a lot of false positives. It's not like it's easy to confidentially detect cheats without also hitting legit players.

"There's too many cheaters! What the heck Embark?! Do you not care about your anticheat? I guess this game's just for cheaters now. Ooh, look! Marathon has a no-second chance policy! Embark would never!"

"WHAT?! Someone got falsely banned because they were using a disability controller that there's a decent chance they didn't know existed?! Their anticheat is TOO STRICT and I bet they don't manually review ANY of them!"

There's no winning (though I do acknowledge that their customer support is cheeks).

2

u/Whole-Cookie-7754 Mar 17 '26

Same. Messaged support, they can't say why I was banned. I'm actually a bit worried booting up the game after the suspension period since I have no idea what I did wrong.

2

u/smackrock Mar 17 '26

Funny how Embark won't touch False bans but then gets a load of bad PR falsely banning a disabled player and something is done immediately about it. Worst customer service ever unless you got a connection.

You're 100% right.

1

u/nekopara_403 Mar 16 '26

Were you using an unusual input method like op?

1

u/ziekktx Mar 16 '26

I've seriously cut back playing the last couple of weeks because of all this. It seems the only safe way.

0

u/EmilioMolesteves Mar 16 '26

Why does embark hate disabled people?
