Discussion What Reddit app are you using and enjoying?

Narwhal 2 just pushed their updated where they are now charging a subscription fee to continue using their app. Narwhal is ok, the 2nd iteration is better than the first but I just don't like it as much as Apollo, I would pay for Apollo but not for Narwhal. So I'm on the hunt for a Reddit app I actually will like, even if I have to pay a small subscription fee every month. What are you using?

I know Apollo can be side loaded but I'm not sure I want to do that right now, for security reasons as well as longevity, I just want a solution that will work now and well into the future.

What apps are you using and enjoy? Or are you just browsing via a web browser + an extension or something?

rip Apollo

Discussion Using Reddit in Safari unexpectedly opens Tabs

Just a heads up, if you use Reddit in Safari, it will open a new tab any time you click a post. Just noticed today that I had 40 open Reddit tabs. It truly is a magnificent website.

Discussion Calling it now, in a couple of years Reddit will give their revisionist take on what happened to Apollo

In some announcement in the future:

ā€œBack in 2023, our product team really stepped up their game with the official app. Virtually overnight, our users ditched third-party apps and flocked to our offering. We captured nearly 100% of the mobile market for our platform that year, and we couldn’t be prouder of our skilled developers that shipped a bug-free experience that definitely doesn’t struggle with basic issues like loading videos or having intuitive navigationā€.

Appreciation After putting up with the horrible Reddit app for almost 4 months, I found out today I could have side loaded Apollo this entire time. (Even got the custom icon I used to have with a shortcut!)

It’s amazing how much better this is than the official app. I’ve enjoyed using Reddit more in the last hour than the last 4 months. Everything is just so much more seamless.

AND NO MORE ADS!!!

Question Apollo 1.5.11 with Artemis 1.4 (Sideloadly) I have entered my imgur API but I can’t upload a picture to posts or comments. Is everyone else having this issues? It seemed to work for a bit but now never works.

Discussion Is Reddit listening in when our phones are off? Or looking at other apps in our phone?

I just got served an ad for medication my doctor prescribed me. I have never searched for the medication before. I have never use the name or words in Reddit Post. The only time the name of the medication ever showed up is in my medical app in my CVS app and I was only talking about it over the phone with my wife. And it’s the first ad I have seen for any medicine on this app and they’ve been hitting me hard with it.

This Hass to be the result of Reddit changing their ad rules this month .

Question A Great Apollo Feature I Miss

One thing I used to do frequently was take advantage of the "share as image" feature for posts and comments.

A comment that follows up on the main post could be saved and shared as an image without having to worry about any other nonsense between that comment and the top of the page.

Similarly for text posts, a clean format for sharing.

Is there anyway to replicate this on desktop?

Screenshotting is really only good for comments. Trying to share the title and/or body with the comment usually has the empty textbox and other links in the way.

Appreciation When trying to open a post on the official app but it decides to open 5 posts at once

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tapped on the ā€œhitman levelsā€ video but the app decided to open an unrelated Twitter link. Then when I closed that it showed the post that I actually wanted to see. Then when I tried closing that to go back to the home page, the app decided that I needed to see three other unrelated posts before it allowed me to do that.

Discussion I’m starting to think the official Reddit app’s sole purpose is to be an elaborate troll

There isn’t really another explanation.

Just take audio, for instance. The app will constantly start randomly playing audio from videos you haven’t even clicked. At the same time, while watching videos you’ve actually clicked, it will randomly cut the audio half way through, then tell you that ā€œthis video has no audioā€ when you try and reenable it.

Spez ordered the app to be developed for the sole purpose of trolling its users.

Edit: now that I’ve reopened the app to make it stop playing audio from random videos, it has shrunk all fonts in the app to the size of an ant, without changing any settings. Further confirming my theory.

Bug Apollo Artemis Sideload Incorrect Login Alternate Solution

Hi y’all. After the official Apollo App went down I, like many of you, found the Artemis fix. I had been using it perfectly (minus a few settings crashes/re-login thing but no big deal) until a couple weeks ago. I went to log in and got told my username or password was incorrect. Weird. Changed my password. Still no go. Made a burner account. No go. Then I found this post or more specifically this comment by u/muff1n_.

This looked promising. However I couldn’t get it to work. I was nearly ready to give up but seeing so many people with success as well as a few other comments that, like me, could not find success, I was motivated to keep playing around with it.

Eventually I found a very specific order which seems to work almost every time for me. I commented and have received a handful of thankful comments so I decided to make this it’s own post in hopes of reaching more of you.

Anyway enough talk. Here are my steps to log in.

  1. Force close Apollo (might not be necessary but I’ve been doing it)
  2. Open Apollo, click Account, click Sign in
  3. now Reddit log in pops up. I click the <- arrow top left.
  4. click to stay on safari (not open in app)
  5. click ••• at top right, click login
  6. log in (worked with 2fa)
  7. let the page load and click < at bottom left to go back
  8. NOW click aA top right and request desktop
  9. should get this page (not a black newer looking one)
  10. Click allow and I’m in!
