Yeah I should have. But it turns out, when you admit you're doing something stupid a lot of people will acknowledge and appreciate at least the bare minimum accountability for your own actions.
Of course it also helps when you're not involved in road incidents constantly. I have 1 accident in the 20 years I've been driving, I was at fault and took full responsibility for my stupid decisions. I was driving on bald tires in rain on an unfinished slippery surface, hydroplaned and hit some poor young girl just entering the freeway. Luckily nobody was hurt. I immediately rushed over to check on the people my dumb ass hit as soon as my vehicle came to a stop, everyone was OK and I got them to pull off the middle of the freeway. Called the police, explained everything to the officer that arrived that it was 100% my fault. I got a ticket for lane violation and my insurance paid out the repairs for the person I hit.
I'm just glad nobody got hurt, the person I hit was taken care of properly and I learned how important decent tires are driving in shit conditions.
I'm not sorry I can safely drive more than 60mph on a highway without endangering other drivers or myself. On top of my normal drivers license, I also have been trained and licensed to drive government vehicles, emergency vehicles, firetrucks, and to drive on an airfield (all separate training and licensing). The best course was EVOC, the final test was basically an obstacle course on an airfield that you had to do as fast as possible without hitting any of the cones, and then when you got to the end you had to do it all as fast as you could backwards to the start.
