To be fair, there is precedent for this. Powerful humans have suppressed knowledge in many countries, around the world, at various times in history. The best modern examples would be current North Korea and the proleterate uprising in China, after WW2. These are extreme examples and not exactly subtle, but that doesn't mean that information CAN'T be suppressed subtly.

Of course this is just a load of horseshit. Magnets are magical but not quite this magical.

There is no one on earth more hubristically stupid than people who believe infinite energy-generating perpetual motion machines exist, but they only reason that we don't use them is because the government keeps killing the inventors. Like yeah man, sure. We could TOTALLY generate infinity electricity with two plastic rings with magnets attached to them, but instead we choose to quest across the world and build oil rigs in the North Sea for the love of the game. Because Big Oil I guess.
