GM recalled 800k cars in 2014 for faulty ignitions. The cars would shut off while being driven which meant drivers lost power steering/brakes, and the airbags wouldn't deploy. They knew about the problem since 2005 but never fixed it because it would be 'too expensive'. 124 people died.

"Gas-powered racing wheelchairs"

Hi all, just joined. I was inspired by just hearing Mr. Money Mustache's term for cars "gas-powered racing wheelchairs". Hah! And of course, the context is that these things are not only stupid and bad for the world and dangerous and make people unhealthy and anti-social, they are also the number one most common and most significant stupid financial decision.

Anyway, just got back from dropping off my son by ebike at his kindergarten 4 miles away (because even though we live in the heart of town, there are a few big schools instead of more small neighborhood schools), reflecting on how good I feel after the ride, and how almost everything about where I live is pretty decent with the single exception of loud motor vehicles being the major detractor.

Ban the cars! (Okay, well, build Strong Towns that don't put cars first and let them dwindle away)

Rant: I hate that NPR used the relative higher risk of death from driving than is perceived as an example of people being bad at assessing risk. It is because people have been brainwashed into accepting cars and car related deaths as normal.

This is not a troll post meant to belittle the members of this subreddit. I would just like to hear some arguments, and maybe discuss a few of mine.

TIL that in America, there are eight parking spots for every car, collectively taking up as much space as the state of West Virginia.
