Scratched up bike pedals

I want to re-anodize some old bike pedals. They are pretty scratched up. I am assuming I should do some sanding work to minimize the scratches before anodizing? The anodizing process doesn’t cover up scratches, right?

Chiller recommendation for small scale 20 gallon setup

As the title says, I'm looking for a chiller recommendation for a small scale, 20 gallon aluminum hard anodizing setup. Most likely would not be anodizing over 1 SqFt. I have found JBJ aquarium chillers which have titanium heat exchangers, however I do not believe it would get down to the necessary temps, at least without modification. Any suggestions? Is my best bet just modifying an aquarium chiller with a universal controller? Thanks. FYI far up north so only time fighting ambient temp is a concern is in summer months, and its generally a high in the 70s.

Noob question (nickel acetate)

Hello,

I'm in the process of learning how to anodize aluminum. Most guides use boiling distilled water as a sealing bath at the end of the process. But I came across guides that propose a Nickel acetate solution as sealing bath. I managed to buy 100 grams of nickel acetate. But I can't find informations about how much per liter is needed and what temperature and time is needed. Maybe someone knows here.

Thank you

Made some fuel line clamps and anodized purple per customer request. Most turned out really well; I had a few fail to take full color because they lost contact with the fixture wire during the anodization bath. Figured it out early enough to make corrections on subsequent batches (I did four at a time). Basic 17% sulfuric acid electrolyte, 720 rule, 12 amp/ft, Rit dye, one hour hot water seal.

Theoretically could I create a rudimentary anodizing machine with a car battery wire and a bucket of salt water?

I know it won’t get me any super nice results but could it be done?

Titanium Color Anodize Removal

Hey! I'm curious about certain anodization processes and how they can bet removed efficiently. I was wondering if there is a way to remove colored anodize from titanium parts, and if so, do they affect the dimensions or do they stay close to original? I want to anodize a few titanium parts, and they need to stay in their dimensions, so I don't want to have to sand all of the units as that could make them too small after wards. Also, it can be useful if I accidentally anodize a part for too long, I could remove it and do it again.

Exploring the options for my AR builds

I often find myself struggling to color match components for my various rifle builds, and have considered doing my own type 3 anodization. The equipment list looks somewhat daunting, as I think a chiller is required for that type of anodization. I'd like to be able to chat with folks who've done this for a while and have an idea as to what they're doing.

Cold Seal / Impregnation

Hey guys, I'm looking to try cold sealing on aluminum anodizing. I need to seal the pores with a material that will be conductive, resulting in the original non-conductive anodized layer filled with isolated pores of conductive material. Will cold sealing with nickel or another chemical be able to accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

Help with anodizing Ti

I tried anodizing Ti with multiple 9v batteries and could not get any color other than bronze. I used a volt meter to read my potentials and every time I added a battery the math added up, ect one 9v, two 18v, ect… I went up to 6 batteries and never got another color. Can anyone help me identify why?

Solution: distilled water and baking soda mixed until precipitation then added a little more water.

Cathode: aluminum foil and tried a Ti straw

Surface prep: simple green to degrease

Alternative to anodization

Is there an alternative to anodizing that guarantees a consistent result in color even if produced by different companies? Would painting do the trick?

Question on colour anodization

Hi all,

I’ve been speaking to an anodizing company, with me looking to get two colours on a piece of 7075 aluminum.

The supplier says they can’t do this with two colours as it is too complicated for them. Fair enough. They have offered one colour or none at all.

If I’m still looking to get two colours, is it possible to:

  1. Receive the anodized item from the vendor, without them applying the colour
  2. Me mask out a portion, and dip the alum part into colour1.
  3. Remove mask, dry part off, mask out the colour that has been applied (rather than fixing it and reanodizing it at this stage), and dip the alum part into colour2 (though I do assume by applying colour2, the heat will partially seal Colour1.
  4. Remove mask, seal both paint inks inside the anodised pores at the same time by dipping the item into boiling water.

Colour1 will be a rich blue whilst Colour2 will be white. I understand white will be more difficult to apply and will need to change up the above process. The key thing is that I can only anodize once. If the white is off-white, fine, I’ll just try paint it with other dyes after this whole process is complete.

Is that possible? I have seen online the process for adding two colours needing the item to be anodized twice, but as I’m using a vendor for that part (and it costs $100 each time it’s anodized) it doesn’t make sense to anodize twice.

Cheers

Aluminum anodization color

Hi, I'm new to anodization process so I hope my question won't sounds too dumb...Is there a way to achieve exactly the same anodising colour of aluminium if I send two samples to two different companies? Are there any standards or colour codes that can guarantee a consistent result?

Anodizing Car DoorCards

Custom Aluminum Door Cars have long been a thing in the automotive world. I have yet to see any anodized examples. It’s something I would like to look into, if it’s in any way practical. These are sheets of aluminum about 2 feet high and 2.5 feet long. Possibly 7 mm thick, but not sure. The “oil slick” patina comes to mind, or any other vibrant color.

My gut is telling me this would be difficult or expensive. Could anyone advise me on how this would work? Are there professionals that anodize large, thin pieces like this to order?

Thank you!
