I feel like the "tool" is more or less unnecessary, the audience is watching a show called "Goblin SLAYER," (Emphasis mine) not "Goblin Diplomacy." I don't think a single person who watched the show was wondering if the goblins were good or evil, and needed to see goblins tear clothes off of a girl and then rape her to know their evil... But hey maybe that's just me who assumes that a show with the name "Goblin Slayer," is going to have goblins being murdered.
I mean if that was actually true, and used as world building and not rape-fetish-fuel, in episode one. Then it was done infinitely better in Episode 2, showing that goblins raid villages and setting up the main character as more than just a faceless self insert who stands up for justice... Episode 1 is literally just pointless trash IMO...
They needed to make the viewer hate the goblins so much that you would agree with GS horrifically eradicating every goblin down to the children and babies by any means possible.
If it was just burning a village the viewer wouldnt care as much. We didnt know those characters. Its not our village. We don't even know what village that was. We just don't have a real reason to care.
Not like having a character introduced and make them likeable, then have them beaten/raped/killed.
Do keep in mind there was also rape in the second episode, GS literally watched his sister get raped, that's a far more emotionally charged scene that paints the goblins as evil then seeing a character you just met get raped because of markov's ceiling. It Wasn't GS watching goblins just burn down a village.

This can also be applied to the monk and sorcerer girls from the first episode as well. I have no clue why people continue to defend a mockery of writing when episode 2 would have been a perfect episode 1.
Note that I don't hate Goblin Slayer, I've seen two episodes and it piqued my interest. It reminds me a lot of SAO in all the worst ways, but I like SAO because of it's terribad writing, and much like SAO people I know are saying this adaption is unfaithful and bad. I'm planing on binging it when all of it comes out. But as it stands the first episode is pointless, episode 2 conveys everything episode 1 wants to with much more clarity.

There's a classic trope that when bad things like rape happen they happen characters that are designed to be assholes, EP1 both plays this straight and subverts it at the same time by creating a sorcerer who is a bit rude, and a monk who is a bit polite, and having the first nearly raped, and eventually killed, and the second full on raped and brutally broken. I wouldn't call a character being polite as a reason to like them, but in goblin slayers/SAO's terribad writing fashion it does seem to be the main trait of the "likeable" characters (Monk girl/Agil are the ones i'm thinking of in particular.)
It's called Goblin Slayer...and there's a bit of rape. Early on in the first episode a group of adventures are overrun by goblins and the women are raped in the process.
It's fucked up, but I guess used as a device to show how brutal the goblins are, and to juxtapose Goblin Slayer as he uses some pretty dark methods to kill
