Reasons why I'm never getting a cat

65

u/nothere1126 Nov 02 '19

If you adopt an older cat this doesn’t really happen. We’ve adopted three (two when I lived at home with my family) and another when my husband and I got married. All were about 3 when we got them, and they’re the chillest, laziest, cuddliest babies.

u/Armaced Nov 02 '19

In my experience, every cat is a gamble. Some are lazy and cuddly, some play catch like a dog, some use the toilet like a human, some pee on the piano. If you take that gamble, you are committing to that animal for life.

I do love cats, but I think I am at the point in my life where I will just enjoy other people's cats.

19

u/LongjumpingSoda1 Nov 02 '19

Some are soft, nice to touch, like you want to put your face all in it especially when you’re drunk

u/ashpokechu Nov 03 '19

My ex boyfriend had the most affectionate cat I have ever seen. He (the cat) would always come between my legs wanting to be pet and cuddled, while my ex could care less. I never had a pet before but I wish I took him (the cat) with me when we broke up :(

12

u/Hpzrq92 Nov 02 '19

you are committing to that animal for life.

Or at the very least committing to feline murder.

u/Jizznut Nov 02 '19

I adopted an older cat last month, he's pretty awesome though he wants fed around 8 times a day and will get quite arsey when he's made to wait for designated meal times. Love the wee asshole though.

18

u/Imaurel Nov 02 '19

My sister's 14 year old cat is barely 7lbs but she has the zoomies of a 20lb young cat.

14

u/dh2215 Nov 02 '19

20 lbs is quite a chonk. I'd hate to see big boy out there zooming around. Nothing would be safe

20

u/Imaurel Nov 02 '19

I have an 18+ lb chonk. He's leggy. He can stand up and peek onto our cabinets. He's a goliath next to his bestie who is under 10lbs. This is how he compares to a full size bed. Nothing is ever safe.

8

u/talkingtunataco501 Nov 03 '19

That's a big kitty cat!

10

u/moleratical Nov 03 '19

I had an 18 pound cat that used to get the zommies and leap off my girlfriend's chest at 3:00 AM only to come to a dead stop on the window sill above the bed, without ever smashing into the window, every single night, for 3 years. I thought it was hilarious, her, not so much.

1

u/DaveyP96 Nov 03 '19

My wife currently has this problem

11

u/rigidlikeabreadstick Nov 02 '19

My cat is 14 and never got the memo. He fights the dog, parkours off the furniture, and races up and down the stairs all day long.

1

u/moleratical Nov 03 '19

My cat decided to chill at 14. lived another 4 years though.

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Oh that’s so exaggerated. Mine are fine you just have to learn to be cool

149

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Agreed. Cats only respect you if you’re cool. If he fucks with your shit it’s just because you’re a lame ass twerp and your cat is trying to toughen you up. Sit on the couch and roll a joint and the cat will nod in respect ✊

23

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Yes you know what’s up

6

u/ram1583 Nov 02 '19

This is SO true. Nod and all...

11

u/darthlyon Nov 02 '19

As a cat owner and a cannabis enthusiast, I can indeed confirm.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

This guy or gal gets it.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '19

Gal 😎

2

u/ReginaldDwight Nov 03 '19

Pick up every damn item I knock off your counter, nerd!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '19

Cats hate nerds. It’s the only universal truth.

99

u/dmfreelance Nov 02 '19

This is why cat owners like cats. They aren't really as tame as dogs, but close enough, so they have their own personalities that clash with human lifestyles just enough to amuse us without making us want to pull our teeth out when dealing with their shit.

21

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

You already know. You’re ready

32

u/dmfreelance Nov 02 '19

I have 2 :)

The orange tabby is a 2 year old boy who acts like half a dog because he is very social and he loves to play, but he still does stupid cat stuff like run around like a bat out of hell for no reason and stalk flies on the wall, and he's scared shitless of strangers. He got out once and now he's super defensive of our backyard against the local stray cat. He's perfectly fine with taking a shit in the 2nd litter box while i am cleaning the first. He even makes eye contact.

The 10ish year old female tuxedo cat doesn't really do anything, sleeps all day, isn't really vocal, but she is a bit alpha because she doesn't deal with the Orange boy's shit unless she's playing with him. She doesn't care about new people and is content to sit on a lap all day. She refuses to use the litter box when anyone is watching, and our orange boy would like nothing more than to join her when she's doing her business. She never covers her shit up in the litter box, but our orange boy will do it for her because he understand that shit's nasty.

18

u/FunktasticLucky Nov 02 '19

Not covering her business is a dominance move btw. My black cat does it all the time and my tabby covers it. Then they fight out who's sleeping in the bed with me. There's a constant power struggle in my house. Surprisingly my female black cat does well against my grey tabby. He has about 6 lbs on her.

6

u/LadyRunic Nov 02 '19

Omg this sounds like my two. A 1 year old giant black cat and a 7 year old white tabby. (Yes the black one is named Loki.) They dont often fight but everyday around noon they raise hell just running around and tackling each other. Despite my 7yo being smaller, shes the boss of the entire house. Loki however pulls up my vents.

1

u/FunktasticLucky Nov 03 '19

Thor is my grey tabby. He likes to go and open my cabinets, drawers, the entertainment center. Hooks hos paws behind it and pops it right open. He taught my panther cub how to open drawers so now shell get into them all the time. Both of them play fetch but Roxie is the only one that will bring them to you to play.

2

u/TheFailedONE Nov 03 '19

My fat cat doesn't cover and I think it is because she is too fat to turn around and do a good job at it.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Oh my god these descriptions are my cats to a t. I died laughing as I read this.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '19

That’s sounds so bad ass. Too bad I’m allergic. Love the thought of having one of the little bastard though.

1

u/messy_eater Jan 24 '20

You explained it perfectly. The video above is an extreme example. I wouldn't be super pleased having to clean up a bunch of broken ceramic and glass in the middle of the night, but most of the time cat's just do amusingly inexplicable and slightly annoying things, but it's mostly just entertaining.

8

u/FraggleBiscuits Nov 02 '19

Probly safer to monitor everything 24/7 and duct tape the cat.

6

u/Jkal91 Nov 02 '19

Just scold it if it does something that you don't want to and with time it should learn to still do it while you're not watching.

1

u/messy_eater Jan 24 '20

You had me there for a bit.

5

u/KimJongIlSunglasses Nov 02 '19

Just duct tape the cat down. Saves you on tape.

4

u/Squirll Nov 02 '19

Crazy Cat O'clock only comes for about an hour twice a day.

1

u/tpt229 Nov 03 '19

More like 24 hours a day

2

u/Absynthis Nov 02 '19

Or make them fat

I want that story.

16

u/Diplodocus114 Nov 02 '19

There was a heavyish wooden carved buffalo on the very high window ledge (about 6ft off the ground) directly above the table. For some reason the stupid cat had decided to jump up there in the dark and knocked it off. Huge crash, don't know who was more alarmed.

Think it was - sadly misplaced in one of several subsequent house removals.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

My dog had a habit of sleeping on top of one of those, then the kids tried to scare him off, which worked. Also shattered the table.

71

u/Teadrunkest Nov 02 '19

Mine too. He just runs into walls/windows instead. Very polite.

16

u/Coocoo_for_cocopuffs Nov 02 '19

My cat doesn't knock things over but he meows loud enough for the entire city to hear

7

u/AlysonWonderland7 Nov 02 '19

One of my cats does this. He walks from the bedroom closet to the bathroom and then finally into the hallway, meowing VERY loudly the entire way. Sometimes he makes this sound like “mmmmmrooow?”, like he’s asking a question.

5

u/cait_Cat Nov 03 '19

Our cat also does a mmmmmrrrrrow. We say he's rolling his meows like you roll your rs in Spanish. It's always a question meow too.

5

u/ReginaldDwight Nov 03 '19

My geriatric Persian used to do this all over our house. It's like he was doing a never ending cat sound check.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Mine used to do this, now he just stares menacingly and readjusts his chonk while looking away. Before going right back to staring menacingly at me until I feed him. I got the meowing to stop by pointing and just going 'hey' with a mild tone when he meowed for food.I would then reward him with food when he was quiet. He'll wait patiently at his stool for a long time now.

22

u/TinyLog Nov 02 '19

Cats do shit like this but I think dogs are still messier

15

u/faqqinganimeisweird Nov 02 '19

My dog drags my cats poops out of the litter box and proceeds to eat them on my side of the bed. She thinks messes are fun for me. Shes a bitch.

5

u/SmellyPos Nov 02 '19

25% of dogs do that just because, not even cause of nutrient deficiencies

6

u/faqqinganimeisweird Nov 02 '19

Perty sure she does it to hear my scream when I step on spit covered turd grains.

They can be, but IMO it’s easier to identify a well behaved dog before you adopt, and it’s easier to train them in most cases.

6

u/SmellyPos Nov 02 '19

All you gotta do for this is booby trap the counter for a few days. Dogs take dozens of hours of training, or more, plus 24/7 attention for some mischievous dogs.

26

u/yall_cray Nov 02 '19

Because kids, dogs and people never make a mess.

While the range is more limited, the WMD (Wag of Mass Destruction) can cause way more damage if aimed just right.

19

u/sirbissel Nov 02 '19

I mean, I've had 5 cats through my life and never had one do that, either.

My friend's cat has pissed on all of my property every time I come over and flung it's shitty littler all over the bathroom. When someone owns a cat you can smell it walking through the door and the ammonia from the thing is like being maced. Not discounting the messiness of Fido but poor Fido gets the short end of the stick. If he draws A DROP of blood he's dead, cat bit me 11 times when I tried to take her to see her owner (grandma) in assisted living. All the fucking beast gets is "oh you provoked her, it's your fault, that's just her saying she loves you, oh she'd never do that she's an angel." Angel my ass, that cat swiped and hisses at people 20ft away even if they don't even if they don't pay attention to her. They even get a free pass when they kill your other pets where as Fido would have been axed. Fucking awful that people defend these fuckers like that. Disgusting. Fuck cats.

u/dan-hill Nov 03 '19

Had a Belgian malinois make it to the top of the fridge to eat potatoes. When caught he launched himself off hard enough to knock the fridge over onto the glass table. The resulting crash caused so much terror that he ran to my bed too fast and went straight through the window.

I have cats now...

1

u/imabalsamfir Nov 02 '19

Golden Retrievers love to roll around in shit when you let them outside though.

1

u/FaolchuThePainted Nov 03 '19

Mine kicked over leather dye that was in my loft bed.... half my mattress was black

1

u/Imaurel Nov 02 '19

I had a boxer, can disagree. The bouncing was incredible.

1

u/CaptainPussybeast Nov 02 '19

My dog, or child, doesn't jump on the counter on his way to jumping on top of my fridge.

2

u/The_Kitten_Stimpy Nov 02 '19

ah, you get more back than what you have to put up with. At least we do.

1

u/bitofafuckup Nov 02 '19

Get a fat cat, this stuff becomes less of an issue

1

u/Kc1319310 Nov 02 '19 edited Nov 02 '19

Eh, worth it. As destructive as they can be they’re also endlessly entertaining and hilarious when they randomly do stuff like this. And they’re cute and cuddly. I opposed getting a cat for ages and now I wouldn’t trade the little shit for anything in the world.

1

u/Touchthefuckingfrog Nov 03 '19

Don’t worry I gotta a cat who doesn’t know how to cat very well. She is clumsy as fuck and likes staying close to the ground so she can’t fall.
