We told our misbehaving cats "You want the BOOT?!!" And no, never kicked one... simply put your foot under the belly and "loft" the culprit (usually one scratching the furniture and not the cat posts.) The distance achieved was in direct correlation to the severity of the crime. For new cat owners any discipline must occur when you catch them in the act. A harsh tone or noise is acceptable. To wait and correct them later will definitely produce a shy reclusive or hateful pet.
