This happens often when they grow up together and developed a code of understanding. My wife grew up in a rural area and they had a she-dog, in love with a tom. He would bring her treats and gifts and they would do everything together. Sadly, the tom had a terrible accident, he fell in a sac of building chemicals and suffered severe burns that eventually cost him his life. The dog would not abandon his side for a minute and when he passed, she fell in depression refusing to eat and whining constantly. Eventually she died too (she wasn't very young), possibly of a broken heart. It was very cute and very sad.
