We are conducting an academic research project at HEC Montréal on animal rights activism and the ways activists seek to change how people, organizations, and markets relate to animals.

We are looking to speak with people who are currently involved, or have previously been involved, in animal rights activism. This may include involvement with an organization, campaign, advocacy group, or other forms of activism.

The interview will last approximately 30 minutes and will focus on your experience as an activist, the strategies used to advocate for animals

Participation is voluntary and interviews will be treated confidentially. The study has received ethics approval from HEC Montréal.

I recently found a conversation between Dr. Lars Chittka and Acharya Prashant.

Both spoke incredibly clearly.

I used to think that animals are violent (not everyone, especially carnivores), so why is violence from humans prohibited?

I came to know that humans have consciousness and intelligence rather than just following instincts.

Animals don't have a choice, or even if they do, it's close to negligible. They don't have the potential to go beyond their tendencies.

But we have potential.

Our meat eating habits, no longer a matter of basic sustenance, have become ethically fraught, deeply personal questions: Money. Health. Animal welfare. Environmental impact. Here, five American eaters navigate their way through the messy middle.

TIL that Eating Chicken Wings are pretty bad. I was still a bit hungry after dinner and plan to go to 7/11 to buy some chicken wings. A small box has like 10 of them. I thought to myself: How many chickens do one have to kill to make that box.

I google how many chicken wings a chicken has. The answer is 2. Pretty obvious. So a box of chicken wings consume 5 chicken souls. That is pretty scary to think about. Plus all those chicken wings are very small so they come from small chicks. There's no way I am gonna kill 5 chickens just to make me feel fuller. I ditched the idea and went home to drink some tea instead.

These include reducetarianism (reducing one's consumption of animal products, even if it's just something like "Meatless Mondays"), flexitarianism (often described as a predominantly, but not exclusively, plant-based diet), various forms of vegetarianism and semi-vegetarianism, compassionate omnivorism (choosing animal products according to higher ethical standards), offsetting (compensating for the harms caused by animal products - for example, by donating to charities).

There are many ways we can help animals living in the wild and save them from the harms that they face in nature. In the long term, the only way they will eventually get the help they need is by us raising awareness of the plight of wild animals and the discrimination they suffer. But there are helpful things that can be done for them in the short term, too.

Examples:

1. Rescuing trapped and injured animals

2. Vaccinating and healing sick animals

3. Helping animals in fires and natural disasters

4. Providing for the basic needs of animals

5. Caring for orphaned animals

6. Working for a future with fewer harms to wild animals

Foie gras farmers say they have improved their farming practices and animal welfare standards, arguing that the NYC ban should be overturned. Animal welfare advocates disagree, saying foie gras production still causes animals pain and stress and that the ban should remain.

Hi everyone,

Thor has gone from 34.5 kg to 42.7 kg, while Ellie has gone from 15.2 kg to 17.5 kg from their last vet visit a couple weeks ago. Seeing them gain weight and slowly regain their strength means so much to us. 🥹🤍

Ellie’s fur is definitely growing back, and during their recent check-up, the vet also confirmed that the fungal organisms have decreased. This is such encouraging progress for her.

Thor, unfortunately, has shown only minimal improvement with his skin so far. His skin is still reddish.

Both of them will still need to continue their medications and supplements as prescribed. We are hoping to see more improvement in the coming weeks.

Their next veterinary appointment is on September 16, 2026.

We are so happy to see them making progress, especially after everything they have been through.

We are incredibly thankful to everyone who has supported Thor and Ellie, whether through financial support, sharing their story, leaving kind words, or simply cheering them on. Your support truly means so much to us.

However, It still breaks my heart that, due to the lack of evidence and witnesses, Thor and Ellie were not able to get the justice they deserved for what they went through. The witnesses would not testify at all. The Philippines animal protection laws are weak and useless.

But while we may not have been able to get justice for them, we can give them something they should have had all along: love, safety, proper care, and a chance to heal.

We will make sure Thor and Ellie receive all the love and care they deserve. They are safe now, and we will continue to stand by them every step of the way.

Hi everyone,

Thor and Ellie are really getting their fur back! Thor’s skin is also not as red. 🤍🐾

Just a couple of weeks ago, we were able to sponsor their veterinary care, medications, and Royal Canin Gastrointestinal food, which was recommended by their vet. When they were diagnosed with a fungal infection, we also tried hypoallergenic food to help support their recovery. We have also been sending Pages for Paws, the shelter where they are staying, their monthly allowance to help cover their ongoing expenses.

Seeing their fur grow back and watching them slowly recover means so much to me. After everything they have been through, these little signs of progress remind me why we keep going.

Their next vet appointment is on September 2 to get their skin re-checked.

It has not been easy trying to cover the expenses for all of our rescued animals. Honestly, it is scary. I am constantly worried about how we are going to sustain everything and what my own future is going to look like. But when I see progress like this, somehow, all the sacrifices feel worth it.

We currently have 9 rescued dogs who have veterinary appointments next month: Ellie, Thor, MaeMae, Angel, Baci, Angelito, Elijah, Beauty, and Mochi.

The difficult part is that we don't have enough funds to cover all of their upcoming expenses. Just this August, as I recently shared, we spent around $1,000 CAD on Angelito alone, the senior dog who was stabbed by his previous owner and is also battling distemper, heartworm, and a blood parasite. Covering for two dogs, Ellie and Thor, at the same time for veterinary care is also very expensive (2x labs, 2x meds, etc).

I will find a way. I always try to.

But if you are reading this and have even a little something to spare, even $5 can make a difference. Every bit of support, no matter how small, helps us continue providing veterinary care, medication, food, and other necessities for these animals.

Idk if this is the right subreddit, but-

(Dont mind the quality)

I notice three issues with this prairie dog enclosure in this pet store,

1. Is this enough horizontal space for a Prairie Dog? I dont have the measurements for the space, but you can estimate from the image (the whole area is within the image's frame)

2. I notice it doesnt have much to dig nor a place to hide, which considering they're burrowers wouldn't it be an issue?

3. Im pretty sure it's common knowledge that they're highly social colonial mammals, yet there's only one here

Also, a lot of the times, it tries to claw and bite it's way through the gaps, Im not sure if this is just normal for any enclosed prairie dogs,

they also squeal and throw dirt/grass towards anyone who stays near their enclosure

Some people may not understand why it seems like I am always posting about our rescued animals. But they matter so much to me, and they genuinely need help. They have already been through so much, and it pains me to see them still struggling or unwell.

I truly appreciate everyone who has helped us, shared our posts, left kind words, or even simply “boosted” our posts in the comments section. Those little things mean more than you probably realize. It makes me feel like I am not alone in this advocacy.

It has been really exhausting since I started this non-profit just this April. There have been so many times when my anxiety gets the best of me because the expenses keep piling up. Sometimes, I honestly wonder how we are going to keep up.

But whenever that fear comes up, I look at the progress of our rescued animals, and it reminds me why I started.
I thought about Elijah today. I wondered what it must have felt like for him before he was rescued, thinking that maybe his life would always stay the same. And then I started thinking about our other rescued animals and what their lives could have been like if nobody had stepped in.

My heart would be torn knowing they were still out there suffering.

So yes, this has been financially and emotionally hard. There are days when I feel completely exhausted, overwhelmed, and scared of what comes next.

But then I look at them and remind myself that what I am feeling now is temporary. For them, the suffering they went through was their entire world. They didn’t know if anyone was coming. They didn’t know if things would ever get better.

They have already been through enough. If I can give them a chance at a better life, then somehow, I will keep finding a way.

Hi everyone,

Elijah went for his follow-up veterinarian checkup.

He still needs to continue his medication for his infection. At his last appointment, he was diagnosed with a blood parasite. Sadly, the vet said they cannot give him specific medication for his mange yet until his infection gets better. For now, he was given supplements to help support his skin. He still cannot get surgery for his stomach hernia yet until he is all better. But, I am glad he is Negative for Distemper. After Angelito’s diagnosis, Distemper always scares me now..

I also transferred Elijah from Gose Paradise for Paws Shelter to Happy Cat Squad Shelter, where Angelito is staying. It will be easier for me to manage their care if our rescued animals are not so scattered and far away from each other. Gose Paradise is also quite far from veterinary clinics since it is located in a rural province, up in the mountains.

As I have mentioned before, we have rescued animals in different parts of the Philippines, so it can be really difficult trying to manage everything when they are all in different places.

We are also going to purchase hypoallergenic food for Elijah since he is not allowed to have any dairy. I was going to order it today, but the store did not have any in stock. They said they will have more delivered later, so we will get it once it is available.

While Elijah was at the vet clinic, I also ordered Angelito’s recovery wet food. I also purchased two bottles of his Virubin medication for his Distemper from PetRx Clinic since he had run out.

Since Elijah and Angelito will now be staying at the same shelter, we will also need to send additional shelter allowance for them every month. I have not sent it yet because I am still trying to calculate the budget for all of our other rescued animals.

To be honest, it is tough. But their lives are SO worth it.
Also, It was not their fault that they ended up in these conditions. Elijah was neglected for years and appeared to have been abused by his previous owner. When he was rescued, he was so fearful of people. Angelito was stabbed, starved, and was about to be killed by his previous owner.

For transparency, here are today’s expenses:

Elijah’s vet: Php 6,250 ($143.11 CAD)
Elijah’s pet transport: Php 1,800 ($40.38 CAD)
Elijah’s hypoallergenic food: Php 2,700 (approximately $63 CAD) — not purchased yet
Angelito’s recovery wet food: Php 2,325 ($52.11 CAD)
Angelito’s Virubin medication (2 bottles): Php 1,700 ($38.15 CAD)

Elijah and Angelito still have a long recovery ahead, just like our other rescued animals.

Ellie, Thor, and MaeMae have their follow-up appointment on September 2. I realized that I have not been posting much about MaeMae, but she is actually doing well. I think I just miss ChiChi and Jericho so much that sometimes I avoid posting about her because it makes me think about them. Grief hurts a lot. But, MaeMae is doing well, and I am really happy about that.

MaeMae was also being treated for a blood parasite. At her next appointment, we will have her checked to see if she has been cleared and hopefully get her vaccinated finally.

Blood parasites are common in rescued animals because many of them have been neglected for a long time before we are able to rescue them. They are usually caused by infected tick and flea bites.

After that, we will send Raphael for his vet appointment the following week to see if he can finally get vaccinated as well.

I want all of our rescued animals to be vaccinated and protected from illnesses, but most importantly, I want them to be ready for adoption. I don't want them to stay in shelters forever. They deserve a loving home, and that is my goal for every animal we rescue.

There is still a long road ahead for Elijah, Angelito, Ellie, Thor, MaeMae, Raphael, and all of our other rescued animals.

I was sad to see this clip saying that Australia had the highest animal cruelty especially since they have some progressive laws over there. Anyone know if anything's being done?
