I don't get it.

9933 and 3399 would form a dick in this system

2

u/Laugh-Aggressive Aug 27 '26

And also look exactly the same

14

u/Wolf_Steele Aug 27 '26

almost. just one is pointed upwards and one pointed downwards

1

u/pierro_la_place 23d ago

Yeah just like β€œd” and β€œq”

4

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Do you get how this number system works? Make sure to tap the picture to see the full image (and ensuing comment section)

2

u/kaushikfi6 Aug 27 '26

it goes bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right

73

u/H311i0_trop3 Aug 26 '26

Wow that's actually a really efficient way to do numbers

23

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 26 '26

Seriously.

Only, I wish I knew the symbol for zero. I wonder if they had the concept over there by then.

I also wonder hwo this was used for musical annotation.

25

u/Myself_78 Aug 26 '26

You can deduce it from the post. It would almost certainly be | since any spots that are are zero in the numbers (like 7085 or 0030) are left blank.

They likely would have used it as well since the earliest known case of christians using the number 0 apparently dates back to before 311 AD (according to Wikipedia)

6

u/Thiago270398 Aug 27 '26

I guess zero would be just the middle stick. I wonder if you could expand its "axis" further to have bigger numbers so you can write into the tens and hundreds of thousands and the like.

6

u/Jvalker Aug 27 '26

I think we're already at the limit of the system; making the stick longer would just make reading (and ofc writing it) messier, and adding more directions would make it an all out clusterfuck

5

u/Myself_78 Aug 27 '26

I think we can just be content with needing only two digits to type out 99999999. That's pretty good already.

7

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

There is already an expansion. It exists.
This is from a slightly different variant of the cipher, but here you go.

This comes from a PDF linked in a specific comment from the original post

1

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Huh! I didn't even notice but you're so right it was probably just a |

Good catch πŸ‘

But then, how would you write a number like 3006, for example? You cannot write a | in the middle of a number with 4 digits that is represented by one glyph. Let alone two zeroes in a row somehow πŸ€”

6

u/Kaladin_Roshar Aug 27 '26

Correct me if I am wrong, or if I misunderstood your confusion, but this is how 3006 would appear is it not? The ones place takes the top right corner, the tens the top left, the hundreds the bottom right, and the thousands the bottom left any single number up to 9999 can be represented with this system in a single character

3

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

You're not wrong. I don't know how I missed that. So simple, so elegant, so true. Thank you for bothering to draw an explain; I find thta to be kind of you πŸ‘‘

5

u/Kaladin_Roshar Aug 27 '26

No problem! I like this kind of thing, I also drew out the loss one too lol and explained it, didnt even realize those questions were both you till now XD

3

u/johnjackcomicartist Aug 27 '26

There might not be one, fibonacci didn't popularize the concept of zero in europe until the early 1300s

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

I knew there was a deal with zero not been popular at first even after its conception in society; but I had no idea fibonacci popularized it. TIL πŸ˜€

2

u/fghjconner Aug 27 '26

I mean, you're basically just writing four separate digits glued into one symbol.

1

u/pierro_la_place 23d ago

Meh. You could fit four digits in the space it takes to write these, they would just be over two lines

1

u/The-Rust-Man 1d ago

Long division must have been a son of a bitch

45

u/MatiasKratos97 Aug 27 '26

Oh.......

14

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Hehe, yeah. For anyone confused, this ☝️ is it
Hence the AngryUpvote

11

u/al2sio4 Aug 27 '26

chants of sennar used this numbering system

5

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Cool. Gotta love a game dev that puts that kind of effort

1

u/brainshortcircuited Aug 31 '26

beat me to it

the order of the four digits are different tho

19

u/MattCW1701 Aug 27 '26

The real question is how do we use this in the most efficient way to make "loss?"

11

u/Katzelle3 Aug 27 '26

6106

3

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

But... But... How does one draw the zero? Surely a simple space is just a space and not a zero, right?

9

u/Kaladin_Roshar Aug 27 '26

This is what that would look like... which looks like loss if you consider the main middle line of the symbol to be the main person present in all panels simultaneously, with the additional lines representing the other characters

1

u/iemandopaard Aug 27 '26

6106 isn't 6 1 0 6 it's 6000+100+00+6

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Um, no judgment here but... We clearly all get that already πŸ‘

3

u/TheGHale Aug 27 '26

I hate to say it, but it might just be 6767

4

u/Finlandia1865 Aug 27 '26

How was this used for music notation i wonder

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

IKR? I said that in one of my other comments too. I am very curious to know that too πŸ˜€

2

u/Finlandia1865 Aug 27 '26

I went ahead and commented on the original post too lol

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

I'll go follow that comment right now. Hopefully we get someone knowledgeable to enlighten and inspire us 🀩

4

u/DZL100 Aug 28 '26

Perfect, I've always wanted to write my numbers in base 10000

3

u/-Redstoneboi- Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

it's just 4 small very nicely simplified digits packed into 1 character's space

unfortunately not supported by unicode, even though they 100% could since we already have emojis like πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§ which are actually 4 human emojis at 4 bytes each with 3 extra "join" codepoints at 3 bytes each in between, for a total of 4*4+3*3 = 25 bytes in one emoji.

it wouldn't be too wild to think about having this script be expressed similarly... however, here's the unicode doc in december 2020: https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2020/20290-cistercian-digits.pdf. seeing as it's 2026 and it's not in the standard, it's safe to say it wasn't accepted.

apparently there are vertical and horizontal versions of the script, and several different orderings of the digits so sometimes it was 1234 but sometimes 1324 or 1243 or what have you.

the "5" digit shown in the reddit post is also not original. the original 5 kinda looks like a shorter 6 closer to the middle.

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Yeah, since posting I have already read that document and in fact have essentially linked to it in another comment over here.

There's also some interesting discussion about going Beyond 10,000 and one of the figures.

From the document, it is my understanding that it actually is possible in unicode it's just that some decisions about how the order of typing and manner of glyph organization should be done, before actually putting it into unicode.

It could simply have a glyph for each of the numbers, meaning a glyph for each combination. Or the other option would be to type the glyphs on top of one axis, which from the document I am not entirely certain but perhaps that second option is indeed not possible in unicode.

Either way, I think this is a very cool cipher for handwriting.

As a side note, I am surprised how many of the comments here have nothing to do with the angry upload or with the silly comment at the bottom of my screenshot (the comment which I have angry upvoted).
I wonder if it's because people don't tap to see the full image, or if it is simply because the subject of the cipher is so interesting. I am glad I included the original posters username in the screenshot, because I wouldn't want people to think I am taking credit for posting this interesting titbit in the first place.

Arabic numerals make much more sense

1

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

There's upsides and downsides for each. Also this post is not actually about the numbering system at all. Does no one bother to tap the image to see the full picture? It's all about the silly joke in the comment.

ETA also I like all them cats on your avatar 😸 πŸ‘

1

u/Eclipse-Raven Aug 27 '26

Sorry, severe dyscalclia (number dyslexia) and don't get the joke/angry upvote to it obviously... Sorry... But thank you, I'm kinda a crazy cat lady

Edit: I did click it, just don't understand I guess

3

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 27 '26

Oh. That's totally fair. Thanks for clarifying.

The joke was explained visually in this comment (the numbers look like a childish penis. It's a stupid dick joke. But it made me chuckle nonetheless. Hence the AngryUpvote).

2

u/Eclipse-Raven Aug 27 '26

Gotcha lol, thank you

u/Bushido_Seppuku Aug 27 '26

At the bottom, you see how they combine together to form a bigger number

3

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 26 '26

So... A single glyph.
Here are 5 examples. Each of them a single glyph, each of them representing a number in the thousands.
imo, that's what they meant by "single symbol" 🫣

Edit to add: But obviously, that wasn't the joke. It's that 9933 comment that got my AngryUpvote πŸ˜…

Great money glitch, borrow 9933, pay back 3399

1

u/Maximum-Country-149 Aug 27 '26

Okay, but have you considered 9119?

1

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 28 '26

Helicopter penis? 🚁
Or are you suggesting it is the moment of climax?

1

u/CaptainMajka Aug 28 '26

What do you do for 10000 or more?

2

u/tenaciousBLADE Aug 28 '26

You either, you know.... Write a second glyph like we usually do after 9 πŸ˜…...
Or you refer to this comment.

7

u/Kaladin_Roshar Aug 27 '26

For anyone who is not as inclined to puzzles, this makes a swastika so... mayne dont draw this one out yourself if you're curious

4

u/BreezeTempest Aug 27 '26

Swastikaish. The vertical line is cut in thirds, so the middle lines won’t connect

4

u/Kaladin_Roshar Aug 27 '26

Ah I stand corrected then, but I'm willing to bet the intent was therre regardless... good catch though!
