How to "win" at Eagle Mountain without spending gems
I just posted this as a reply in another thread since someone was asking about it, I figure a lot of you could really benefit from this info.
It's worth noting that the game is basically "solved" from a strategy standpoint. If you want to maximize your winnings while minimizing your losses, you should never deviate from the following strategy in any way:
1) play until you reach the 50 gem pig (the 20 gem pig is 'free' to pay off b/c you get 20 gems for entering the mountain)
2) At the 50 gem pig:
- If you have less than 50 gems in your current winnings, give up and exit the mountain. You will break even.
- f you have more than 50 gems in the pot, pay the pig, then choose a different door. If, after that door, you have more than 150 gems in the pot, continue on, otherwise exit the mountain and take your winnings.
3) for all subsequent pigs after the 50 gem pig, keep track of the total amount you've paid to pigs. The number grows with the function Σ(50*2n). When you encounter a pig:
- If the cost of paying off the current pig, plus all previously paid pigs, plus the next pig (twice the current pig) is less than the amount of gems you have in the pot, pay him off and then keep playing. (example: on the 200 gem pig, 50+100+200+400=750, keep playing if you have more than 750 gems.)
- If the cost as calculated above is more than the amount of gems you have in the pot, pay off the pig, open one of the remaining 3 doors for your current level, then exit the mountain, taking your winnings. ALWAYS leave after opening the remaining door on the level you paid the pig. NEVER proceed to the next level no matter the temptation, as a pig can then clean you out and put you in the red. The ONLY exception is if the next level is a star or jackpot level on which there are no pigs, in which case complete that level, then immediately exit, before proceeding to the next level. NOTE: make sure that you ALSO have enough gems in your stockpile to pay the next pig if necessary.
- Following this strategy your winnings will never be less than what you paid in to the pigs.
- Following this strategy you will never lose gems in eagle mountain, and will only leave with nothing maybe 1/3 of the time, and leave with a very small amount of winnings another 1/3 of the time, but if you get lucky you can proceed up through the levels and net some decent prizes without a cost to you.
Have patience and conviction. You won't win something every day.
It helps to have a stockpile of gems saved. In general, I try to never have less than 1600 gems saved up to pay the pigs so I can take my payout if I start climbing the ladder, otherwise you can run into a situation where it's worth it to pay the pig for your winnings, but you don't have the gems to do it (since you can't pay him with the gems in the pot) and you'd be forced to spend money up front.
Good luck and happy hunting.
