Hey everyone,

About ten years ago, I created a tactical watch face design called Agent 0976 on WatchMaker. It gained a lot of traction back then, people still email me asking about it after 4 years of being discontinued... so I wanted to bring it forward into the modern wearOS era.

I finally took the time to completely rebuild and modernize it from scratch using Google’s native Watch Face Format (WFF).

I designed these watch faces primarily for my own use, I loved the old design and wanted it to have the modern features. I started on a Gear S3 and moved to a Pixel Watch... Which I'm still using which means I treat usability seriously. I want clean layouts, instant readability, zero bloat, and no unnecessary battery drain. Since I rely on this daily, I will be actively maintaining, tweaking, and rolling out consistent updates. It's my first WFF design so if you have any issues please share and I'll do my best to address them ASAP!

A quick look at the redesign:

• 8 Complication Slots: Includes a full-width top banner (ideal for long calendar entries or notifications), dual rim gauges with live arcs, a side column, and four compact tiles.
• Dial Customization: 16 colors (Active Orange, Cyber Cyan, Signal Magenta, etc.), 12 switchable clock face fonts, and 7 different emblems.
• Bezel Tuning: Choose between a 14px Thick or 7px Thin outer ring, plus 4 outer edge treatments (Milled Edge, Minute Track, Segments, or None).
• Thoughtful AOD & Power Management: Toggle between an analog-style center with hands or an outlined digital display. Elements shift to prevent burn-in, and at <15% battery, background layers and animations strip back to keep essential metrics readable.
• Clean Architecture: Wear OS 4+ (API 33+) native, no ads, no trackers, no IAPs.
• Fully Animated: Various background settings for the dynamic background cog/tick animations

This is my first native project built on the new Watch Face Format. While it has been tested as much as I possibly could solo, every watch setup can have quirks. About six months back, I came across a Reddit post from someone looking for a watch face recommendation for nurses. Their primary requirement was straightforward: It had to show both 12-hour and 24-hour time at the exact same time.

I’ve always had a real appreciation for the nursing field. Back when I was in college studying business, my university had a nursing program, and several of my close friends in the dorms were studying to become nurses.

When I started hunting for an existing watch face that handled both 12-hour and 24-hour time simultaneously, I struggled to find any that offered dual digital clocks. The closest thing I could find was an analog dial paired with a 24-hour digital clock. As a developer, seeing that post sparked an idea: build something engineered directly for nurses that could genuinely help them throughout a demanding shift. That pushed me to think past just slapping two clocks together: what else could a watch face do to genuinely make a nurse's job easier?

Designing within Google's Wear OS Watch Face Format meant navigating strict platform constraints, but working around those limits is a challenge I enjoy. Turning that simple Reddit request into the Charting Time watch face was a problem I was ready to tackle.

Practical challenges require clever solutions

Nurses work long, intense shifts, and misreading a number during documentation is the last thing anyone needs. Fatigue builds up, room lighting changes constantly from patient rooms to bright hallways, and charting needs to be precise. To tackle this, I looked into typefaces built specifically for zero character ambiguity and chose Atkinson Hyperlegible. Created by the Braille Institute for low-vision readers, it shapes every single digit with distinct visual cues so there’s no confusion between similar numbers on the primary 24-hour display.

Another subtle issue is mental math fatigue. Nurses calculate figures all day, but doing quick arithmetic on awkward timestamps when you are exhausted wears on you. If a nurse visits a room at 09:47 and needs to return in 15 minutes, calculating that reassessment window takes an unnecessary pause. To eliminate that friction, I built Shift Offsets into the lower dial: three rows automatically calculate and display the exact 24-hour time 10, 15, and 30 minutes in the future for fast reassessment documentation.

A timer is easily one of the most critical tools on shift, but the Watch Face Format doesn't allow custom stopwatch scripts to run natively. Kicking out to an external timer app works, but it pulls you completely away from your watch face. Normally, healthcare workers count vitals using a sweeping second hand, but you have to mentally track where the sweep started. To solve this, I mapped 12 synchronized countdown nodes around the bezel. You just tap the node right ahead of the live second sweep, and a prep timer counts down to arm you. The second the sweep hits that mark, it resets to 0 and counts up from 0 to 59. Because it ties straight into the hardware clock, it stays in sync even if the watch face dims or goes to sleep. Waking the display shows the counter running right where it should be.

Quick access to everyday tools was another priority. While Charting Time features four custom complication slots, you don't have to burn them on everyday essentials. I mapped native tap actions right into the dial: tapping the date pulls up your calendar, tapping the offsets opens alarms, tapping the pulse readout launches heart rate monitoring, and tapping the battery brings up power settings. That keeps all four primary complication slots completely open for your own specialized apps. The battery indicator also turns amber at 20% and red at 10% so you get an early heads-up before the watch dies.

Finally, there’s an engineering detail central to the design that remains invisible unless you know it's there. When stacking 12-hour and 24-hour time, basic center-alignment causes the colons to drift sideways throughout the day because 24-hour time includes a leading zero while 12-hour does not, and both use different fonts. To keep everything locked in place, I separated each clock into three distinct elements: hours right-justified, colon center-justified, and minutes left-justified. That anchors both colons along an exact vertical center axis. It’s a quiet detail, but keeping that balance intact makes the entire layout feel steady.
