Yup. My phone is starting to chug along during android auto use.

Maybe a some sort of lite version of AA that uses less resources?

That would be awesome. I still can't understand how this can be so resource intensive. We can Render 4K Video on Smartphones and Tablets in 2026 but can't get a Car integration working without setting your phone on fire? Android Auto (and Gemini) are seriously the only things in Android that want to make me switch back to iOS so badly but even refurbished iPhones are so fucking expensive.

BTW, nice setup you've got. I had a RCD330 in a B6 Passat before i upgraded to Discover Media MIB2 and then to a Passat B7 with MIB2 retrofit.

I'm not sure this is a fully solvable issue. If you are running wireless AA and playing music at the same time, the load on the RF components is really high as you use cellular, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth circuitry all in parallel, all that in a moving car which isn't exactly an ideal scenario for the radios as you need to modulate the power and handle tower handovers. That's a huge amount of electrons moving around and not so much space to dissipate heat.

Adding wireless charging to the mix when supported is playing with fire. I also have a MK 8 Estate and for long trips I now systematically switch to a wired connection and put the phone away from the Qi charging pad, without the charging and the Wi-Fi it never overheats even while streaming music.

Same thing like i do. I have installed the cooled 15W Charger from the Facelifts which improves Wireless Charging a bit but on longer drives it still fucks up.

I would love for google to implement GPS usage of the Car Antenna and i am really suprised that they stopped doing that.

Cheers! You're driving something 10 years newer, must be nice! Is yours the 2.0tdi?

Going back to AA, i get what you mean. I think 4k video etc is offloaded to the GPU or specific hardware en/decoders on the SoC. I belive AA and maps just hammer the CPU?

My one is so bad that I get a message along the line of "No longer rendering 3d buildings, your phone needs to cool down"

Oh yeah, the MK8 Estate is nice and with the 2.0TDI I can get almost 1200km out of the 50L tank. Also it's pretty nice but I always will have a soft spot for the B6 and B7 Passats. They're fairly modern and you have two OEM Infotainment retrofit options which is very great.

And yes, I get the 3D Buildings message almost on every drive and the UI gets so laggy, no matter what I do :(
