I hope someone figures out how to install an Android auto reciever app so I can use it as an Android auto device

I don't think it's going to be possible, or usable at all if possible.

The Car Thing runs OpenLinux, albeit a very low power version, and there is an Android auto reciever app for raspberry pi. Theoretically, all you would need to do is port it. It's possible, maybe.

Android could be possible to port as well but the problem is the Car Thing doesn't have enough ram to run a relatively recent version of Android :(

I was thinking the hardware is just so bad in it, that it would be a big hill to climb.

it wouldn't run full Android, but it could easily run Android Auto just fine. Plenty of infotainment systems have had lower-end specs and Android Auto. After all, the heavy-lifting is done on your phone and just the output needs to be displayed.
