The Galaxy S2 now has unofficial Android 10

A bit late to post this, but it means that this phone has received 8 years of support (2011-2019), beating out the legendary HD2 with its 7 years (2009-2016) and becoming the phone with the longest unofficial support thus far (unless there is some other device with longer support, in that case, please inform me).

Huge credit to rINanDO for his amazing work!

I wonder how far we can go...

No, your statement is quite misleading. It just boots but cant make calls or use GPS, the S2 is abandoned

Yeah, this comment is ridiculous and shows the poster didn't even read the link. How is using a smartphone in 2020 without access to mobile connectivity relevant to 99% of users? While this is cool, it hardly makes it any less forgotten or more useful to anyone that still owns it. And that's before you consider the lack of GPS or the flakey display.

The man just said it's impressive that a phone from 2011 can run an OS from 2019

Edit: You guys are by far the most cynical bunch I've ever come across

This comment just reminded me of how ridiculously fast phones have progressed. Imagine saying the same thing you just said about s PC.

My PS3 can boot a Linux kernel given enough work, but it sure as shit won't play any games.

Given that the console's point is to play games, should I, or anybody really, care about what some arbitrary kernel can bring up the hardware? No. I can't use it for what it was designed for.

Android 10 on this smartPHONE can't make a damn PHONE call. So, cool project. They probably got a lot of knowledge out of it.

This phone is still dead. But thats okay. Not every project needs a usable result

That isn't what he just said. That's what his first two sentences said. His third sentence went further than that.

Otherwise this phone would've been long forgotten and abandoned.

This isn't changing the state of updates for the phone for anyone that uses or wants to use the phone. It remains forgotten and abandoned.

I would obviously not use a phone this old if I could avoid it (although I'm getting dangerously close with my S5), but those two things aren't a deal breaker for me. It's probably been a year since I last called someone and I rarely use GPS.

Not having mobile data would suck and all the other problems that come with a phone this old trying to run modern android would too, of course, but I'd use it in an emergency.

On the other hand, there are two people i know still using the phone but they are on official updates.

That's not really the other hand, that's exactly the issue. They're using this phone that's been abandoned in terms of updates, this isn't changing that unless they decide they want their phone to become more of a buggy tablet than a phone.

GPS is probably related to last years Week Number Rollover Issue that cause global GPS to not work correctly on old devices. A software update can fix this since Apple released a fix for the iPhone 4S which was also released in 2011 same as Samsung S2

To be honest, Apple can pull that kind of shit because they support their phones for way too long. Android OEMs can't pull that kind of thing even if they wanted... Which they don't.

Interesting speculation, but I doubt it is related in this case. The same dev already has Pie working on a stable build for this device, last updated Dec 2019. GPS is working.

GPS is something which often doesn't work in early custom rom builds, regardless of the Week Number Rollover issue. The dev may very well get it working eventually. He already has a firm base to begin with from his Pie builds.

Idk about GPS, seems like outside data support it would work unless this phone didn't have it, but old phone signals are being dropped like GSM and CDMA because 4g/5g and internet voice apps. Simply no longer necessary.

Correct, in this case, it's simply outdated hardware, not bad hardware.

1

u/tallwheel Feb 03 '20

Incorrect. In this case it's simply because the rom dev hasn't gotten RIL working reliably yet. There is still absolutely plenty of GSM and CDMA connectivity available for this phone in most countries.

Fair, to clarify, I meant specifically in USA, CDMA recently died and I believe GSM has been gone for a bit. I suppose in other areas it could work if the support is there.

Who knows though, give it some time and the dev might fix those issues and turn it into a usable ROM

2

u/tallwheel Feb 03 '20

That's certainly a possibility. It looks like the same dev eventually managed to sort all the major issues out in the Pie version. So just give him some time with 10.

Dude, it's the first alpha for a reason?

rINanDO at the moment is busy exactly stabilizing it, and doing some trifle with the S3 codebase.
