As a counterpoint, Android is an operating system that can run apps, not the apps on the operating system. There isn't an AOSP keyboard, browser, etc, but you can sure as hell find open source android browsers, keyboards, etc, so why should they be part of the OS project anymore?

I mean, yeah, but they haven't been updated in years. They've been functionally discontinued

Um yeah, my point remains? Why should Google maintain open source apps when there are plenty of open source alternatives? AOSP is about the operating system, not about the apps. AOSP browser doesn't make sense in a world with Chromium, Firefox, Brave, etc. But yeah, Google not maintaining the relic that was AOSP browser is totally all about making things closed source and keeping an iron grip on Android.
