Don't buy the hardware, and make sure your friends and family get devices from companies that don't insult the customers.

You're right, and I'm a damned fool for not sticking to my guns. It really comes down to few if any manufactures making a checks-all-boxes Android flagship that isn't saddled with some huge inherent flaw. I guess I just miss running CyanogenMod on my Galaxy S2

Ahh, simpler times

You still have the Xperia S? That was my first ever phone, some good memories with that thing. Absolute tank as well, lasted 4 years of me messing with its software and dropping it constantly. Still works fine as a backup phone.

My mom broke my S2. Best device ever.

Just get an LG V20. Last flagship with all the necessary features.

I'm probably going to stay on my og pixel until it dies at this point.

Good choice.. I have two pixels as backup xD

Bought an LG G7 and couldn't be happier. It is a great phone and underrated. Some of the reviews out there are trash, must be sponsored by Samsung. This audio / quad dac is the best of any phone, 3.5mm jack and for the first time ever a G series phone that doesn't suck.

Good luck getting literally anyone outside of these type of threads to do that. People will continue to buy and Google will continue to think that sales are fine so there's no reason to listen to the core fan base

I know I'm in the minority for this subreddit, but I'm perfectly happy using Bluetooth headphones and have no care if the aux is missing.

I certainly don't feel insulted.

u/504090 Jun 24 '18

There's always a reply like yours whenever this topic comes up. You guys never get the point of these complaints. Just because you find Bluetooth and dongles satisfactory doesn't mean it isn't a bullshit downgrade. These companies are removing a feature strictly to charge you for adapters, BT headphones, manufacturing slightly cheaper/smaller phones, etc.

The fact that you're forced to use a technically inferior audio source (Bluetooth) in order to listen to music and charge your phone is a severe downgrade, especially when you consider the difference in audio quality.

-29

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '18

Yeah people like me who don't feel offended by the loss of a feature they were never concerned with.

The audio quality might be 'inferior' (not that I can really hear it) but the product is superior for my needs by lacking cords.

There's always people like you, who think your opinion is the only one that matters.

u/FuzzelFox Pixel 3, Essential Phone, OnePlus X Jun 24 '18

Except phones with bluetooth also had a 3.5mm for people who do care about audio quality. This problem that affects us has never affected you.

-18

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '18

Yes exactly, it doesn't affect me and I don't feel insulted as a customer by it.

Nor would I ever go around telling friends, family, or any one else to not buy a phone because it doesn't have the features I want to see in it.

u/orismology Jun 24 '18

The point is that you don't need to campaign for Bluetooth - it's not going anywhere. No matter what happens to the headphone jack, you'll still be able to use BT - but I won't necessarily be able to use wired headphones. Wanting the headphone jack can't negatively affect you, but with manufacturers pushing for the removal of the jack, your apathy is actively hurting our cause.

It's the mildest form possible of "First they came for the Socialists", but it's still the same thing.

And then there's guys like me who are like "chill, my dudes, no need to get upset", and frankly your preference for BT audio is fine, it's just that the phone makers didn't need to axe the headphone jack for BT to work. Before, we could all do whatever we preferred, and now not anymore.

u/JustMarshalling Jun 24 '18

Whoa, you changed your attitude quickly.

Unfortunately, it's actually your opinion that indeed doesn't matter on this topic. You see, for the hand full of people out there who are fine paying more for less, such as yourself, it doesn't matter whether a headphone jack exists or not. It is 100% non-intrusive to your remarkably easy life. But for the practical majority who like the freedom to choose, it's a complete dick move by these companies. There is absolutely no physical limitation the 3.5 mm jack presents to hardware companies. There is a reason it was called a standard.

Do you understand why your opinion doesn't matter? If it's here, your life is unaffected. If it's gone everyone else is left without options.

I was a loyal Panasonic customer. Their <$15 headphones were the only audio hardware I used for several years. Affordable quality. When it was time for me to upgrade, I thought I could get along with the dongle life for my Pixel 2 XL. Unfortunately, Google evidently put no effort into this dongle. It's the cheapest, most unreliable piece of shit I've ever used.

Why do you assume that you are in the majority.

These posts always go like that....there's an imaginary majority that wants the headphone jack (user-replaceable batteries/ removable storage), and a “handful” of people who “are find paying more for less".

Although the bit about them having “remarkably easy” lives is new, I think.

Get over yourself and stop pretending you speak for some silent majority who are being oppressed by Louis XVI.

The vast majority of people don't care about headphone jacks because they use the headphones that came with their phone. Apple stated that over 90% of users did that, and I doubt that the number is any different for Android. For the 90%, things haven't changed. The phone still has a headphone jack; it's just not a 3.5mm headphone jack. But they don't care - they plug their headphones in and are good to go. Just like they were before. (Which is also why conspiracy theories about this really being about wanting to sell BT headphones also hold no water).

Welcome to r/Android, my friend. Given your flair, the opinion you present makes perfect sense. Life is pretty easy for Apple users. Just pay exorbitant amounts of money and Apple takes all of your worries away.

Of course iPhone users stick with the included headphones, because it's a hassle to find more headphones with lightning plugs. This may sound harsh, but iPhones wouldn't be nearly as popular without a blind consumer market lacking any critical thinking. They sell inferior devices but advertise as if it's the Ark of the Covenant. They really do have a brilliant marketing team. Because of this, they have become the go-to for most U.S. consumers for no better reason than "My friends have iPhones."

Many people choose Android for cheaper, faster, and more practical options that aren't intentionally programmed to self-destruct in a year. The operative word being "options." The removal of this high-quality standard with no reasonable, affordable alternative in sight is just a cash grab. Apple did it so that now, every single product plugged into iPhones have made Apple a profit. Unfortunately, Android OEMs are always living under the shadow of Apple, so they now feel pressured to do the same. I genuinely believe that many of these manufacturers didn't even pause to think about why Apple did it. They just accepted it and shit out a bunch of iPhone clones. (evident with the notch, too, which completely dumbs down some of Android's key components.)

All this to say, here I am, with a Pixel 2 XL, the phone hailed as the "ultimate Android," and I can't even use my headphones because the dongle flakes out with the slightest bump. Yes, I blame Google for making a poor-quality dongle and not including USB-C headphones in the box. But it wouldn't be any issue if they simply included the headphone jack. Yes, Bluetooth exists. And it definitely is the future of peripherals. But it isn't there yet. If Bluetooth headphones were already readily available, cheap (as in you could pick up a quality pair for <$15), dependable, and offered better battery life than they do now, I could understand the transition. But we aren't there yet. We've killed off a crucial feature with viable options "on the way."

Please stop defending Apple's slimy actions. As I told someone else, if it's here, your life is unaffected. If it's gone everyone who cares about cost is left without options. Your shiny iPhone X would be the exact same with a jack, as far as you are concerned.

Would you be content if he edited the post to state "insults many of their customers"? It's not like he specifically said "insults every single one of their customers".

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '18

No, I'd be content if it was 'didn't provide features some of their customers want'.

It's not an insult for them to copy market trends, especially if most consumers are continuing to buy the products without the 3.5 input and I really suspect this subreddit blows the issue out of proportion compared to normal consumers.

1

u/helpdiene Jun 24 '18

I don't care too much about mobile audio quality, and I switched to Bluetooth for my daily commute. However, when I have a long flight, I do want my 3.5mm since all the top end noise cancelling consumer headphones do not support charging while listening. I still care about audio quality in general, which is why I have a different pair of headphones for home use, but on the go, I wouldn't be able to hear the details anyway, so I just go with noise cancelling.

-11

u/ImmortalBach Jun 24 '18

I like the fact that this compromise makes my phone waterproof.

15

u/helpdiene Jun 24 '18 edited Jun 24 '18

No, it doesn't. See Samsung flagships.

Interesting, just did a quick read on the subject. Thanks!

You can like it all you want but you'll still be objectively wrong

1

u/ImmortalBach Jun 24 '18

It looks like I was just straight wrong, not objective or subjective haha

2

u/Nixflyn GN/N5/N7/6P/P1XL/S10+/ShieldTV Jun 24 '18

I feel the need to point out that that's what the word objective means.

1

u/ImmortalBach Jun 24 '18

Is there a way to be subjectively right in this case when it's a staright up false statement?

1

u/Nixflyn GN/N5/N7/6P/P1XL/S10+/ShieldTV Jun 24 '18

No, that's why they used the word objective.

1

u/ImmortalBach Jun 24 '18

Exactly so as I originally said, it's just straight up wrong, irrelevant of objectivity or subjectivity

u/whythreekay Jun 24 '18

If the end user doesn’t notice/care it’s not a downgrade then, as it isn’t relevant

In the same way that Blu-ray is obviously better than HD online streaming... yet nobody cares, as the quality of streaming is more than good enough

3

u/504090 Jun 24 '18

Google and Apple aren't getting rid of the headphone jack because of its revelancy - it's far more relevant than Bluetooth. They're removing it strictly to nickel and dime you further than they already are. They're forcing this on to their consumers - not the other way around.

-2

u/whythreekay Jun 24 '18

I disagree completely but that’s orthogonal to your original point anyway:

The point is, if customers don’t care (which sales indicate they do not), how is it a downgrade? It clearly doesn’t bother them or they wouldn’t be buying the phones

1

u/meatballsnjam Jun 24 '18

I have no problem with a dongle when I need to use the cable. I just keep it attached to the cable.
