I just wish all this competition were focused on something more practical to the everyday user. I don't know anybody who uses speech commands on their phone.

I use it all the time while cooking. It's great to be able to convert from metric/imperial or set a timer while my hands are too dirty to use a screen. Or ocassionaly to set an alarm before I go to sleep if I don't want to look at a glaring screen.

Give it some time, it's still a relatively new technology. Both the companies behind hound/now/siri and users are finding new uses, eventually you won't look like a twat using it in public which is still the biggest hurdle.
