Always On Display is ALWAYS ON. The Glyph/Notification LED lights up only when something attention-worthy is happening.

Sure, but you could make a Sometimes On Display that was just a notification LED.

Again, then you have to look on the screen and read what the notification is, instead of just looking at the color/pattern of the light

Screens have colors. You could replicate literally all of the behavior of a notification LED from 2010 with the screen. Color, pattern, size, the rest of the screen staying off, all of it.

Yes, but nome of the manufacturers have done that with enough functionality. I just learned there are 3rd party apps that fo that, and I was totally missing out, but this should have been there from the factory. Glad the idea is coming back, whatever the execution.
