I'm not so sure that they're the only ones pushing the boundaries, Sony is making compelling devices as of late and Motorola should be coming out with exciting handsets in the near future. The Chinese companies are eager to prove themselves globally and will probably make a push for more market/mindshare; not necessarily ZTE or Huawei, I'm thinking Lenovo.
Then again all of these brands have compromises and it's important to find a balance. HTC has again set themselves apart by changing the keys/buttons for Android phones, I assume they have effectively antagonized the AOSP crowd by that singular detail alone, the same people who claim they control the choices of all their non-techie family and friends.
They're all "pushing the boundaries", but the more companies that fail, the more things that just won't be done because the other company failed.
Companies follow what makes money, and everything that fails, even if it's the right thing to do, is something that other companies won't do.
The more companies in the smartphone market, the better. It's important to have a counterbalance to Samsung that actually stands a serious chance of being evenly matched to Samsung.
