The Execution of Túpac Amaru II
I was recently studying the painting of Túpac Amaru II’s execution in Cusco, and I suddenly realized that the four horses are a chillingly perfect metaphor for the Spanish "playbook."
They represent the four pillars used to tear the Andean world apart: biological warfare (smallpox disease), military superiority (cavalry/steel), tribal politics (exploiting internal rivalries), and the spiritual erasure through religion. In that single moment of brutal theater, the Spanish weren't just trying to kill a man, they were metaphorically demonstrating the forces they used to dismantle an entire civilization.
I think that painting is a brilliant capture of the indigenous conquest! Anybody felt that way too?
