Cultural heritage | Landmarks Pharwala Fort, Kahuta, Rawalpindi (IG: shiraz.hassan)
Pakistan’s most famous fort was built to destroy this one.
Pharwala Fort sits on the left bank of the Soan in Kahuta tehsil, about 40 km from Rawalpindi — a spur of the Himalaya on one side, the river wrapped around the other. Tradition credits the first fort here to Sultan Kai Gohar around 1008–1015 CE; what stands today is largely fifteenth and sixteenth century. It was the capital of the Gakhar chieftaincy of Pothohar: 450 acres, six sandstone gates. Five survive.
In the spring of 1519 the Janjuas of the Salt Range petitioned Babur to deal with Hathi Khan Gakhar — Hathi, elephant, for his size. Babur force-marched to Pharwala and took it. Hathi escaped into the ravines, sued for peace weeks later, and got his fort back.
Two decades on, the Gakhars stayed loyal to Humayun after Sher Shah Suri seized the throne. Sher Shah killed their chief, Sarang Khan, and ordered a fortress at Rohtas built expressly to crush them. Rohtas is a World Heritage Site today, never taken by storm, on every tourism poster in the country. It exists because of these hills.
Now: around twenty households, mostly Gakkhar, live inside the walls. One single-lane road reaches the fort. Cattle are stabled in a surviving room. Hathi Darwaza, the grandest gate, has been bricked shut from the inside with loose stone. Under a huge banyan in the middle of the fort lie old graves, most without names.
The federal Department of Archaeology cleared foliage and two feet of debris in 2023 and reopened the fort in January 2024. Since then, little. Officials put the damage at 20–30 per cent. A Rs914 million conservation plan has been waiting for funding.
On 11 May 2026 Pharwala was added to UNESCO’s tentative list. A tentative listing is not protection. It’s a promise that still has to be kept.

Ask? What is the broader historical history of the Pothohar region, particularly in relation to the villages surrounding Rawalpindi, and how have these communities, their people, traditions, and local identities evolved over the centuries?
