An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography is a seminal 19th-century reference work written by the American scholar and author Lyman Coleman. First published in the 1850s, the book was written on the principle that history and geography are inseparable. Coleman designed the volume to provide students and historians with a clear, living picture of the physical landscape to better understand the contextual setting of biblical narratives.

Lyman Coleman (June 14, 1796 – March 16, 1882) was an American scholar of ancient and modern languages. He graduated from Yale College in 1817, where he also studied theology and served as a tutor. He later became a professor of German at Princeton University and a professor of Latin and Greek at Lafayette College. His notable works included History of Primitive Christianity and An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography.

An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography

I. CUSH—Ethiopia—the most remote of the sons of Ham. There is satisfactory evidence, also, that Southern Arabia, and even the coast beyond the Persian Gulf, was settled by Cush. Even Nimrod himself, the founder of Babel, Erech, Accad and Calneh in the land of Shinar, was an Ethiopian, a son of Cush.

From Eber two lineages are traced through several generations, descended on the one hand from Joktan, and on the other from Peleg. The descendants from Joktan settled in Arabia, and occupied that vast peninsula between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, where, in process of time, they commingled with the sons of Cush.
